Why You Shouldn’t Buy the iPad Pro

Published

on

Apple announced and unveiled the iPad Pro last week and will release the new device in November, but here’s why you shouldn’t buy the iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro is Apple’s latest addition to the iPad lineup, and while it looks very similar to the company’s current iPads, the biggest difference is that it sports a huge 12.9-inch display. making it one of the biggest tablets we’ve seen, period. Plus, it still sports a high-resolution Retina display with a 2732×2048 resolution.

Again, the design of the new iPad Pro is almost exactly like the iPad Air 2, but it’s simply just larger in size. It has the same aluminum shell, but is slightly thicker at at 6.9mm, while the iPad Air 2 is 6.1mm.

There are even some exclusive features with the iPad Pro, including Apple’s new Bluetooth stylus that allows you to draw and write on the iPad Pro’s screen with accurate precision, more so than most other styli on the market currently. Plus, you can also get an attachable keyboard to make typing easier on the new tablet. It connects to the iPad Pro’s proprietary dock connector on the bottom edge. Both accessories will be available when the iPad Pro releases in November.

However, while it seems that the iPad Pro is the tablet of your dreams, here’s why you shouldn’t buy the iPad Pro.

iPad-Pro

When it comes down to it, the iPad Pro is probably overkill for most users. While it performs better than the iPad Air 2, thanks to its new A9X processor and 4GB of memory, it’s more performance than most users would ever even need.

Furthermore, perhaps the biggest reason why you shouldn’t buy the iPad Pro is because of the price tag. The iPad Pro starts at a whopping $799. That’s $300 more than you would spend on the iPad Air 2.

Unless you’re using the iPad as your main device over a computer, there’s no reason to spend $800 on a tablet, and even then I’d almost recommend getting a MacBook Air, which allows you to do a lot more than a tablet would. Plus, it comes with a keyboard so that you don’t have to pay for the keyboard attachment for the iPad Pro, which costs $169 on top of that $800, so now you’re looking at $970 for a tablet with a keyboard.

Of course, iOS is the biggest hinderance here. The Microsoft Surface has done well and it’s essentially just a tablet and a keyboard for about the same price, depending on what model you get, but it comes with a full-blown Windows operating system, whereas iOS isn’t quite at that point.

In other words, the iPad Pro is still an iPad, but just a slightly bigger one. It doesn’t come with a more-capable operating system than other iPads — it still has the same iOS.

So who is the iPad Pro for anyway? What kind of user is Apple targeting with the new tablet?

iPad-Pro-Features

It’s right in the name. The iPad Pro is a tablet for professionals, especially those that work out in the field that need a portable and capable device for getting their work done, but want something that’s a bit more portable than a laptop.

Photographers and graphic designers are easy targets, especially considering that you can pair the stylus with the tablet and have a really great digital drawing board of sorts. It would also work well in the business world, where users could use the iPad Pro and the stylus to mark up documents and annotate presentations for notes during business meetings.

Apple will allow anyone to buy the iPad Pro, but not everyone needs it. Most users already have a computer and a smartphone that they use, and a tablet is merely a Goldilocks combination of the two that allows them to casually surf the web and play games without lugging around their laptop, but still having a larger screen.

Of course, if you find yourself doing absolutely everything with your iPad and spending a lot of time on it, it’s possible that the iPad Pro just might be worth it, but it’s likely that the iPad Air 2 is able to do everything that you would want it to do. A bigger screen is nice, but is it worth paying $300 more for? Probably not, unless you really have the cash to blow.

Actually, the iPad Pro should be called the iPad Plus since it really has no real pro features, other than maybe the stylus. Also, it is probably closer to the Surface 3, not the Surface Pro 3 in power and functionality. When you compare those, the prices is way out of line.

As someone who purchased their first iPad excited to read comics on it…the iPad Pro is the holy grail. It’s pricey, but it’s exactly the size of a comic. To be able to read a digital comic without pinching to zoom or having to scroll. This is the tool that I have been waiting for since iPad 1.0.

Yeah, I’m actually weirdly disappointed with the amount of power they’ve given it. I want it for PDFs and god is it is overkill for that.

The cost is not an issue. I’ve been waiting for a larger tablet that I can use for my writing/research. Laptops are way too hot, especially if you are a floor-sitting “lap” holder like I am. I can put the tablet in front of me on the floor and bluetooth a keyboard that I can sit on my lap and I’m cool as a cucumber. I’m currently doing this now with a smaller tablet and it works all well and good but when I’m trying to multitask I really need that larger screen. I don’t want any Microsoft products ever again. I’ve been using them my entire life and I’m done. I don’t need the world at my fingertips so this, to me, is perfect.

The large size is something I’ve been waiting for Apple to produce for years. The iPad Pro will be fantastic as a tablet – ideal for reading books, comics, and magazines, and with the keyboard, will allow use of Office applications including Word, and very soon, also even the writer’s dream application, Scrivener, now in beta for iPad. It beats the thick clunky heavy hybrids, including the Surface with its frankly crappy touchscreen. I have tried many alternatives but no company makes a touchscreen as good as Apple’s, as sensitive and responsive, flexible, and intuitive. I cannot overemphasize how grossly inferior I found the Microsoft Surface to be. I owned one. Second generation. It looked great in ads what with its live tiles. In reality, it was terrible. Awful touchscreen. Same experience when I bought an Android phone. I’m done with non-Apple touch devices. Now instead of having an iPad and a Macbook, I will only need an iPad Pro.

Really? You had trouble with an Android phone? What exactly did you buy? I mean, depending on the manufacturer and model, we could be talking a crappy device or a truly powerful experience with high-grade hardware and the ability to customize and program your phone to be something akin to a bionic arm.

Like others, I have been waiting for a large format iTablet since almost the beginning of iDevices. I want to use my iOS apps on a larger screen. I want to read magazines without having to zoom in and out. I cannot wait for the iPad Pro and will be one of the first people to buy it. In fact, I wish I could pre-order it. I’ve been eking out the life of my iPad 2, hoping it would hold up until the iPad Pro became available.

While the Surface is better with Windows, it doesn’t have cellular access so it’s a loser for true mobile computing.

I too have been waiting forever for a larger screen. I have tried so many of the rest, have always had this idea in the back of my mind while I was busy spending so much money on useless tablets. I want what I want!

I’ve tried the other tablets and they just weren’t as responsive as the iPad. If someone makes one, and nailed it,, then I’ll switch but for now Ipad (IMO) Is the only choice. I use them for work and the pro will be great, I’m looking forward to it. It’s a bummer that they only offer 128 in lte, I typically get the employees the cheapest lte version becuse they don’t use much onboard memory. They’ll not be getting the pro lol.

I agree wholeheartedly! I feel as though the writer of this article is in love with Windows. I am no professional anything. But after having the iPad Air for a year or so my eyes became wide as saucers when I saw the Pro and I can’t WAIT to get it! :)

I find this “new” crank out from Apple to be over priced and lack luster. Great the screen is bigger, there are plenty of cheaper tablets out there, in fact you can buy a third party bigger tablet, root it, put a custom os (a Linux tablet is pretty awesome by the way) or a flavor of Android. Hell you can even flash some of the third party tablets and put IOS on them, its really not hard at all, really any level of skill set can do this kind of thing with a Youtube video. Why would anyone ever pay that much for a tablet if you’re just going to read on it. Lets not mention Appls snoby presentation. Pretty though talk from somebody making overly expensive pices of hard ware that cant multi task like there computer counter parts, no smart phone IOS or Android can multi task like a computer.
