Why You Shouldn’t Buy the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Right Now

Published

on

Carriers around the world are currently taking Samsung Galaxy Note 4 pre-orders ahead of the Galaxy Note 4 release date. The unlocked version of the device is also now available to U.S. buyers. However, we’re here to tell you that there are some good reasons why you shouldn’t buy the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 right now.

Samsung’s all new Galaxy Note 4 is an impressive smartphone and one that comes loaded with high-powered specs including a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, a brand new 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, a new S Pen stylus, Android 4.4.4 KitKat software that’s backed by TouchWiz, and a brand new design that comes with both plastic and metal materials.

The Galaxy Note 4 is set to replace the Galaxy Note 3 in several regions starting this month including the United States, India, United Kingdom, and several other places around the globe. In the U.S., carriers are currently taking Galaxy Note 4 pre-orders ahead of a Galaxy Note 4 release date set for October 17th. That’s just one of the ways consumers in the U.S. can buy the Galaxy Note 4 ahead of its upcoming release.

Retailers like Amazon and Expansys are also offering the Galaxy Note 4 to U.S. buyers ahead of the Galaxy Note 4 release date. These are unlocked versions of the Galaxy Note 4 and they should arrive ahead of the device’s October 17th release date. While these offers might be tempting to some of you, there some reasons why you should consider holding off on taking a Galaxy Note 4 pre-order or buying the Galaxy Note 4 ahead of time.

Here’s why you shouldn’t buy the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 right now.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Price

If you haven’t heard, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is available, right now, in the United States. Carriers are taking pre-orders and Amazon and Expansys are both selling it unlocked ahead of it street date. None of these options are in your best interest right now and we’re going to tell you why.

First, these unlocked devices come with extremely expensive price tags. Both are charging $850 for the unlocked model. That’s almost a grand and it’s $30 more than the unlocked price from AT&T. AT&T’s price, for the record, is also outrageous, especially when you consider the fact that other premier Android devices like the LG G3 are much cheaper.

Samsung includes a 2k display in the Galaxy Note 4.

Samsung includes a 2k display in the Galaxy Note 4.

Speaking of carriers like AT&T, the Galaxy Note 4, if pre-ordered right now, will run you about $299 on-contract or anywhere between $699 and $826 off-contract in the U.S. Those are the prices at carriers and they’re the prices at top retailers like Amazon. If you know a thing or two about Android phones, you’d know that these prices will almost certainly drop in the next few weeks.

Flagship Android smartphones always start out at $199-$299 on-contract before dropping in price in the days, weeks and months after release. The LG G3, one of the year’s best, saw its price slashed just a few days after its arrival this summer. We’re fairly certain that the Galaxy Note 4 is going to get the same treatment given the competition and given that we’re just weeks away from Black Friday and the holidays.

Note-4-Galaxy-S5-5

Point is, there is absolutely no reason to pay full price for this phone. Not at a carrier, not at Expansys and not at Amazon. Not with a release right around the corner and not with this kind of potential for deals.

A Galaxy Note 4 price drop isn’t the only reason to hold off.

If You Haven’t Gone Hands-on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a unique smartphone as it comes with a massive display and an S Pen stylus. These aren’t going to be for everyone. We know plenty of Galaxy Note users that bought the device and rarely, if ever, used the S Pen. We also know several Galaxy Note users who wound up hating the device’s overall size, a product of the massive display.

This is not a smartphone that you can order blindly. You absolutely must go hands-on with the Galaxy Note 4 before buying it. You need to ensure that it’s the right size and you need to ensure that the S Pen is going to be worth the price of admission. You simply can’t do either of these things from behind a computer screen.

And herein lies the problem. Most of you can’t go hands on. Some Best Buy stores appear to have the Galaxy Note 4 on display right now though most retailers and carriers have the Galaxy Note 4 either en route or in the back. Wait until you can go hands-on before buying this phone. Loyal Galaxy Note users are the exception though we still recommend going hands on, especially since the Galaxy Note series has seen increased competition this year.

Psst, some of that competition is a whole lot cheaper.

If You Haven’t Done Your Research

Do not make an impulse buy here. I repeat, do not buy this smartphone on a whim. If you haven’t researched the competition (LG G3, iPhone 6 Plus, etc), you haven’t narrowed down your data plan to a final choice, if you haven’t researched data plans, if you haven’t researched your local cellular networks, do not buy this phone right now.

Galaxy Note 4 Features - IR Port Remote Control

We’ve heard from a few frustrated iPhone 6 Plus buyers who are considering the Galaxy Note 4 because Apple’s device is still hard to find. That’s the wrong attitude to take. Use the delay as an excuse to go hands on with the iPhone 6 Plus, and Galaxy Note 4, before you buy.

There is no reason to buy this phone right now if you haven’t put in the time. It’s not going anywhere, any time soon.

Nexus 6 Release Close

Finally, the Nexus 6 release looks close. Rumors suggest that this year’s Nexus will be a collaboration between Google and Motorola. The device is expected to feature comparable specs including a 5.9-inch display that puts it in Samsung Galaxy Note 4 territory. (Minus the S Pen, of course.)

With an announcement rumored for next week, the Nexus 6 is just another reason why it would be unwise to order or put in a Galaxy Note 4 pre-order right now. Nexus devices are almost always amongst the best smartphones on the market and given that it’s coming with a massive display, you’d be smart to hold off on a Galaxy Note 4 purchase right now.

Now, keep in mind, we’ve been hands on with the Galaxy Note 4 and we think it’s a solid device. We’re not saying don’t buy the Galaxy Note 4, we’re saying don’t buy the Galaxy Note 4 right now. There’s a huge difference.

Who would buy a phone these days with only 32GB of internal memory. For the price it should come with 64GB but that isn’t even an option. Apple have done the right thing with the iPhone6. 16GB for casual users and 64GB or 128GB for serious users. I’ll be sticking with my Note3 with 32GB for now as the expense of the Note 4 is just not worth upgrading.

      10/10/2014 at 3:34 pm

@UKTechguy. I would agree completely but since most phones come with a micro sd slot, I have to suggest splurging on a 128gb micro sd card (won’t cost you but maybe just over $100) and you’ll have more than enough memory. Yes a hundred dollars is not necessarily a minor expense, but it is when you consider you’ll only be buying it once, unlike paying $100 per phone to upgrade to the next hard drive size. This is also awesome as you won’t have to transfer data from your old phone to your new, just pop that card in your new phone and you’re done!

@UKTechguy The Note 4 is not meant to dazzle Note 3 users into upgrading, it’s meant to draw users from other markets in. I’m not sure if you have done any research on costs, but a 64gb samsung evo sd card is 31$ making the total space of the Note 4 96gb… an upgrade like that would cost 200$ on an iphone.

I currently have an iphone and I was really disappointed with the next iMeh, Apple can only be successful coming out with what has already been successful in years past. It’s a great business plan, especially since they have one single device and can’t really afford to be crazy with it…but that’s exactly why I’ve lost interest in them

@UKTechguy your pathetic. And stupid. None of that matters. Iphone to android is apple to oranges. I would never buy an iphone on the simple fact that what you buy is what your stuck with. Note 4 (or just about any othe android phone) can handle up 128gb sd giving you 160gb. And a removable battery. Iphone 6 plus $400 on contract $950 off. Note 4 $370 (w/128gb sd card on amazon)on contract $920. You do the math idiot

Actually most Android phones don’t have SD cards any more. I think its only the Samsungs and the LG G3 that still have them.

Its one of the reasons I stick with the Note line.

not really, no… we can all like what we like, but there’s no need to lie. you don’t even know and still you dare to make people believe a lie (“I think it’s only the samsungs and the lg g3”). almost all flagship android phones have expandable memory, I’m sorry the iPhone doesn’t! (it’s still a great phone though I prefer the note 4)

Uh, please elaborate on who besides Samsung and LG has expandable storage on their flagship devices. HTC? No. Motorola? No. Nexus? No. Oneplus? Still no.

how come a lot of websites are trying to put down the note 4? Especially Cnet.

  4. Mike

    10/10/2014 at 4:26 pm

There’s the fact that if you pre-order the Note 4 before the release date, you’re guaranteed $200 on your trade-in. That brought my purchase price (with a renewal of my AT&T contract) to just $99. I then plunked down an additional $32 for a 64Gb SD card and I’m good to go for less than $150. Even if Samsung does cut the price in a few months, it probably won’t go below $200.
I’ve been with the Note series since the original Note launched in 2012, and have compared the Note 4 to the other flagship phones currently available, and am positive I will love my Note 4.

The Nexus 6 is almost certainly not going to have the expandable storage or the removable battery of Note 4. For me, that kills it for me. After 2 years of having those things on the previous Notes, it would be hard to give them up.

The Nexus 6 is also not going to have any of the cool multi window stuff I have grown to love.

Did GottaBeMobile say not to preorder the iPhone 6 or 6+? The phone will probably drop by $50 for Black friday. When I bought my Note 3 from AT&T, Amazon had it for $50 less the following week. I called AT&T and told them i will return the phone and buy it for $50 less. They gave me a $50 credit.

I wish there were real bloggers that do not have a bias opinion on cell phone . When you purchase a phone, you buy it for your needs. Not because you hate another product. This article clearly stated how much he hates android and why you should wait. Giving excuses does not mean you have the right to put another brand down. I try to avoid these reviews because of bloggers like you.

One of the major reasons you give for not buying the Note 4 is the screen might be too big for you but then the phone alternative you suggest has an even bigger screen. Makes sense.

The person who wrote this article is an APPLE FANBOY and completely retarded. A very quick research will shows that this is the best mobile phone so far ever made even in compare to nexus 6. So before writing an article u better do your research as well BUDDY!

    • Frank T.

      10/16/2014 at 2:39 pm

No, he’s not. The entire point of the article was to make sure that you had hands-on experience with any of these larger devices before ordering it. That’s smart, sensible, good advice.

And, it applies to the iPhone 6+ as well as the Notes– as the author even indicated.

If he were an Apple Fanboy, he’d have touted the iPhone 6 and 6+ over the Note regardless of the features of either– and he didn’t!

Instead, what I see in many of the comments is an anti-Apple blindness–seeing pro-Apple bias even when it’s not there!

      Re-read the article again, folks!

      10/11/2014 at 10:52 am

This is the stupidest article I have read in a long time. You say don’t buy the note 4 it’s too big then say get the 6+ but the footprint the of the 6+ is larger that the note with a smaller screen. That makes no sense. You say it’s too expensive you should get something cheaper or wait till the price drops, but the 6+ is the same price and you only get 16gb of storage, half the screen resolution, half the camera, 1/3 the ram, and 1/4 the processor speed. That makes no sense. Why not wait on the iPhone 6 or 6+ with what you are actually getting for your money they should have been priced at $99 and $149. If you haven’t done your research then maybe you shouldn’t write these articles.

What is the point of this post? The same arguments can be made towards buying any smart phone, or any product out there. Don’y buy it because of the price? Don’t buy it until you try it out at the store? Don’t buy it because a different product may be released soon afterwards? How is the Note 4 any different than any other product out there? Seems to me like Adam Mills has a personal agenda here.

Most phones drop in price not long after they have been released and Samsung will be desperate to make sure the Note 4 is a success at any price. Unless you want to be a guinea-pig, it’s always based to wait a while whilst all the bugs are ironed out and any problems found – and benefit from any price cuts. I won’t buy the Note 4 with only 32GB at the current price, but might consider it if the price drops by $100-$150 – otherwise I’ll stick with my Note 3 until something else comes along!

  22. MarkInKeizer

    10/11/2014 at 10:09 am

Considering the Note3 wasn’t discounted in my area for 9 months after release in not so sure the it will be discounted is a sure thing. Yes, the 6 Plus is out soaking up some of that market, but I’m not convinced that’s enough. I’m an iPhone user that is underwhelmed by the 6Plus and I’m switching to the Note4. Considering my iPhone 4S went belly up, I have little choice but buy the Note 4 now. I just wish it would show up.

This is the worst article i have ever read. I am from India and i own Note 2 ( unlike US we dont have subsidised rate for mobile phones. So i skip n+1 version ). Forget about note 3, in the last 2 years, the note 2 price is same in India. According to this article i should wait until the year 2020 to buy note 4 :-)

  24. Ramkumar

    10/11/2014 at 11:51 am

Also.. according to this article…. (1). Iphone 6 plus doesnt require a hands on because iphone 5s and iphone 6 plus are of the same size. (2). Iphone 6 plus is smaller than note 4. (3). Iphone prices will not be reduced in the future. So we can pre-order iphone and not note 4 (4). 5.9 inch is smaller compared to 5.7 inches.

    10/11/2014 at 12:28 pm

So basically the only reasons you gave in order not to buy it is by doing more research? Not every phone is for everyone so why even make that a point? As an animator and someone who needs more storage for photos and videos on expandable memory in order to use that with an SD card, I see no point in investing in an Apple phone. My reason is for who I am and other people are different. But with the S Pen in order to make a note during a phone call and to actually draw and sketch my next designs in order to be effective in what I do, I don’t see any REAL competition here. You keep saying to wait for this phone, wait for that phone, keep doing research and not to buy right now while you do research with other phones. Isn’t that what everyone does anyway? Go back to school to become a real editor for actual articles.

    10/11/2014 at 1:45 pm

You are missing the deal Best Buy and Samsung are having. Obviously I wouldn’t buy the phone if it was $300. But trade in an old phone (or buy an old phone for very little) and trade it in, it suddenly becomes a $200 discount for the Note 4. That makes it $100! That is the same price as last years Note 3 model! Go to best buy if you want to feel the Note 4. I agree, paying full price (and contract price) is crazy, but there are deals to be had that won’t be around post-release.

As long as you submit your pre-order stuff and get the Note 4 before November 30th, you can still take advantage of the $200 rebate, and potential sales/price reductions after the phone is released and/or Black Friday deals a month later.

  31. Jaded-Fan

    10/11/2014 at 11:36 pm

If you preorder Samsung will guarantee $200 trade in on any phone valued $10 or more. So in effect you can get the phone for $99 with a 2 year contract.

That is a good reason to preorder now.

  32. Christy

    10/12/2014 at 8:59 am

Samsing is offering everyone $200 if you pre order and turn in any working smartphone. That brings the price to $99 if you are due an upgrade, which i am. So that makes the note 4 more than worth pre ordering.

Even with the 128GB card for all my media, my Note3 is very full of apps/data that can’t be moved to the card – hence the reason for wanting a 64GB model as internal memory is far faster than card memory. If ever u find your other 1/2 of your brain than write another blog. SAMSUNG beats iPhone for various of reasons. I one is a copy cat on screen size and the watches. They never have their own idea and plus a different IOS . I admit they know how to leech your money at the end. What happens when batter and Sim card goes bad they have to take your phone apart and multitasking is a bit hard when samsung make it user friendly. You are probably better keeping your mouth shut than looking stupid trying to give an opinion without facts behind it. The part where you try to offer a bigger screen on another phone while saying note 4 has to big of a screen is stupid. I think that the point of why people are against you is because this post is only going again the GN4 and your option that is not supported by facts.

I just read read this article like 6 times… I’m confused at all the hate comments being made. I traded from iPhone to note 2 a couple years ago I love my note and pre ordered three of the note 4 with the 200 dollar trade in you can’t beat it. My two kids have the iPhone 6 and they think it’s okay. iOS8 took a lot of their freebies away and they say nothing has really changed other then size and costs for apps they used to get free.. now my post is not apple negative as half my family uses apple the rest android. Going back to this article a lot of you say apple fan boy and this guy is getting paid.. nowehere I could honestly find the blogger trashing the note 4 he’s simply trying to get people to understand making a good buying decision unlike a lot of the young generation buying apple because it’s the hip phone. Both of my kids bought Iphones simply because their friends have them and who wants to wear a Polo shirt with a tiger on it when the same shirt with an alligator on it is the hip trendy thing. If you all take the time to re read this article the author really only truly edifys the Nexus 6 in which he states “Nexus devices are almost always amongst the best smartphones on the market and given that it’s coming with a massive display, you’d be smart to hold off on a Galaxy Note 4 purchase right now”. He barely mentions anything about the iPhone 6 plus let alone saying to buy it instead…. people are so quick to shoot someone in the head. NOW that all being said… no way with the current promos would I wait. I paid full pop 800.00 for my note 2 and although I was out of my mind for doing it I love it. This author could have added in that the note 4 pre ordered come with a 200 dollar rebate. And if you were smart enough to go to best buy they give you the rebate upfront in the form of a gift card you can use to purchase the phone on the spot. So 99.00 (plus tax on 800) and you’re out the door with a spectacular bargain. You just have to make sure your trade in is a working smartphone with no destroyed screen.

I went in a business and to be considerate to others I turned off my phone. That is it. No longer able to turn it on. Can not access emergency phone numbers and there is no sim card. Will attempt to unswayed everyone from finding themselves in a similar situation. Today’s products have no quality or concern for customers. Avoid them !

HORRIBLE article. In retrospect, we have proof Adam does not know what he’s talking about.

I “pre-ordered” at Best Buy. Guaranteed me a slot, guaranteed me a $200 rebate on any working smart phone.

I was given more than a week to decide. Nobody has come anywhere close to the $100 after-rebate cost, and I love the phone, so I accepted the preorder deal.

Adam, you need to (a) Apologize for your horrible advice, horrible miscalculation… (b) rethink what you are saying… (c) get better sources if you’re accepting advice from someone.

Otherwise, you have ZERO credibility. Negative in reality. I am now motivated to tell people to stay away from your writing. That’s highly unusual for me.
