5 Reasons Not to Install Android 5.0 Right Now (Nexus)

Published

on

Google is rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 and thanks to its laundry list of features and fixes, the update is an extremely enticing upgrade for Nexus users. That said, there are a few reasons why you might want to consider holding off on the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, at least for right now, if you own a Nexus smartphone or tablet.

A month ago, Google announced a number of new products including a Nexus 6 smartphone from Motorola, a Nexus 9 tablet from HTC, and an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and Nexus 5. It also confirmed Android 5.0 Lollipop for its stable of Google Play Edition devices. At the time, the company said that the updates would begin rolling out in the “coming weeks” though it did not outline any specific information.

Nexus5-Android5-7

Earlier this month, Google’s Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop release date arrived for select Nexus users including owners of the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Nexus 7. The update, one of the biggest in the history of the Android operating system, takes Nexus users from Android 4.4.4 KitKat to Android 5.0 Lollipop and it delivers a number of new features including the update’s new Material Design.

It’s a significant update to the Android operating system and one that we, and many others, have been enjoying. After spending some time with Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop update and after surveying the landscape after the initial smoke has cleared, we’ve come up with a list of reasons why you might not want to install the update today. These won’t apply to everyone and ultimately, it’ll be up to you to make the decision about when to install Android 5.0 Lollipop.

You Own a Nexus 7 2013

If you own a Nexus 7 2013, you might want to hold off on installing the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Android Police notes that several Nexus 7 2013 variants, including one of their own, are exhibiting video playback problems after installing the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on board. The Nexus 7 is a device that’s built for watching content so this issue is going to be pretty devastating to many Nexus 7 2013 users.

Nexus-7-LTE-Review-2013-Verizon-3

At the moment, there is no permanent fix and it looks like it might take an Android 5.1 or Android 5.0.1 update to fix this extremely annoying issue on board the Nexus 7 2013. So far, this is the biggest Android 5.0 bug that’s been discovered and it’s a good reason to hold off on the update, at least for now. It’s not clear when Google plans to roll out a bug fixer but we tend to see at least one roll out a few weeks after the first public release.

If you’re already on Android 5.0 Lollipop, you can try powering your device off and on to see if a power cycle solves it. It’s also worth clearing your cache. Just keep in mind, the problem is likely to come back and haunt you while you’re watching video content on apps like YouTube.

Other Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop Problems

That isn’t the only problem plaguing Nexus users either. While that might be the biggest issue discovered to date, we’ve pointed out a number of other issues that are affecting Nexus users across the board. Most of these issues are small and isolated but we expect the number of complaints to grow as more and more people get Android 5.0 Lollipop on board.

Nexus5-Android5-3

If you’re having a stable Android 4.4 KitKat experience on your Nexus smartphone or tablet right now, and you don’t want to deal with potential bugs, you might want to hold out for a few days and see if things settle down a little bit. Again, there’s also a chance that Google rolls out a quick bug fixer to eliminate some of the more problematic issues on board Android 5.0 Lollipop.

You Don’t Know How to Sideload

If you haven’t seen the OTA update arrive just yet and you don’t know how to sideload software, take our word for it and skip the Android 5.0 Lollipop update right now.

We’ve heard from plenty of people who are growing impatient with Google’s slow Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA process. It’s been going on for a few days now and many Nexus users are still on Android 4.4 KitKat. This has prompted many users to download the files directly and attempt to sideload the software on board their device.

Nexus5-Android5-4

As we’ve noted, this method is the root of many of these initial Android 5.0 Lollipop problems. People sideloading that have no business doing so. As we’ve noted many times in the past, you should only go this route if you’ve done it, with success, in the past. Everyone else should simply wait for the OTA upgrade to arrive before installing the update. So if you’re not seeing the OTA just yet, do not install Android 5.0 Lollipop.

You’re Not at Home

If you are traveling, hold off on installing the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Again, we’ve heard about manual installation issues and we’ve heard about issues popping up after the installation process is complete. Your Nexus phone or tablet probably won’t brick during the process but there’s a chance that important files or for a business trip of vacation could get lost in shuffle.

Nexus-5-lollipop

The installing of Android 5.0 Lollipop updates should be done from home base where you have access to all of your files, all of your passwords, everything you might need in case something does go wrong during the installation or after the update is installed. Who knows, you might get Android 5.0 Lollipop on board and immediately have to perform a factory reset.

You do not want to have that kind of stress while traveling so if you’re having a good experience, let Android 4.4 KitKat or whatever it is that you’re running ride until you get home.

You Haven’t Prepared

Android 5.0 Lollipop is a massive update and it’s an update that we think requires some preparation. Those that prepare for Android updates typically come out of the installation process unscathed. Prior to Android 5.0’s arrival, we took our own advice and our experience with the update has been, for the most part, outstanding. That’s credit to Google and credit to the work that we did in the days before it’s release.

Nexus-7-review-2013-003-575x330

If you’re not sure what to do, we’ve got you covered. We outlined several things to do before upgrading to Android 5.0 Lollipop. You don’t have to follow every single tip but we highly recommend doing at least a few of these before installing Android 5.0. It’s going to make everything a whole lot easier for you, trust us. Do not install Android 5.0 Lollipop right now if you are not prepared for it. It’s a much larger update than Android 4.4. In fact, it’s probably going to be the biggest update you’ve ever installed. Don’t slack.

Like a muppet I went for the Android 5 update as it arrived last night on my Nexus 7. It seemed to go fine but all I can get out of it now is the 4 dancing lights that just go round a round and round and round. Its been running all night and seems to have turned into a pretty brick

That happened to me. I rebooted, almost wiped the tablet. I cleared the cache and everything worked. I will say 5.0 is laggy.

Updated 5.0 last night onto a Nexus 4… What a mistake. No apps are working. When i touch the app it opens but automtically closes. Can’t access emails or send text messages. Anyone else experiencing these problems.

Same thing here when on charge, the UI system stops and i cant get out of the loop
saying it. As soon as unplug it the error goes off leaving me an unstabled phone.
Reboot unplugged and everything is fixed. (Installament from Google)

BTW i dont like the new environment , if you want to extend battery life, they should
not use any white or ligth colors in the wallpaper or keyboard.

Since downloading this update on to my Nexus 5, none of my apps work. They open for a split second and then immediately shut down. Is there anyway to go back, to ‘un-download’ this update?

That’s been happening to my phone as well.

Headline is misleading. It had me expecting all 5 reasons to be issues with Lollipop. Instead, only the first is an issue with Lollipop, and for a specific device. The rest are generic reasons that apply to any major software update regardless of whether it’s for a phone, tablet, computer, etc.

That being said, I have the Nexus 4, 5, and 7 (2013) running on the official Nexus factory images and I have no issues with any of them. All of them were installed by flashing the factory image instead of OTA. Couldn’t do OTA for the 5 and 7 because I had them on the L developer preview, which doesn’t allow OTA update to the official release. The 4 was on the L preview released by the L porting team, so it too couldn’t do OTA.

So if you have issues and the knowledge for how to do so, consider flashing the images via adb and fastboot. Doing so will wipe your device (make backups!), but perhaps your issues will be alleviated.

    • Sybil

      11/18/2014 at 11:57 am

What is “flashing the images?” I still have a 5 and 1st & 2nd generation 7s to update. It would be good to about problems if possible. ;)

Unfortunately after getting an OTA last night on my beautiful Nexus 5, and being totally unaware that 5L was rolling out, I eagerly watched the download bar, hastily pushed the restart and install button only to have it reboot after the installation and be pleasently surprised by a brilliant job Google has done! Of course I ran SD Maid, uninstalled useless apps, and restarted prior to actually installing, but it went smoothly and I’m thrilled I’ve installed it.

I just upgraded from KitKat to Lollipop OTA and I hate it! I don’t like the wallpapers, I don’t like having to swipe up instead of right to sign in. Was there really that much of a problem with the way we login that it needed changing, or are you just trying to keep bored programmers busy?

In the UK and got the update for my 2012 Nexus 7 Monday. Big mistake it’s turned it into a brick don’t know what to do except wait to see if Google puts out a fix. I can’t afford to replace it.

    • jordykroeze

      11/21/2014 at 10:17 am

The update doesnt brick your device.
But there are some bugs that have to be fixed, like apps crashing alot and going to a white screen after that (Nexus 7 2012)

But you can flash 4.4.4, should fix it.

Really don’t like the lock screen, not to mention, my Pandora controls are gone now. Please tell me how to go back to Kitkat.

Updated to 5.0 yesterday. Currently using a first Gen nexus 7. I’ve been noticing lagging for some time now, even before the update but now it’s just terrible. The tablet has become virtually inoperable. Not good. Last night it seemed to work ok, but then again I didn’t try to connect using WiFi, but today in the coffee shop I was met with a network error. It shows the network bar as completely empty and has a small exclamation mark next to it. It doesn’t tell you what to do, just says there is an error. It for some reason is able to pick up the frequencies of other networks and state how powerful the signal for each is, but won’t actually allow me to turn WiFi on.

The new keyboard doesn’t look great at all. Save the White decor for Apple products.

Anyone else notice that Google Calendar is now terrible. You can no longer click on a date to add an event, instead you have to look ahead for the date, then click the add button in the bottom corner and then manually select the date. I mean it works but come on Google, I want to go straight from A-Z without passing B,C,D etc.

I feel the update has just stopped things from working as they should and also reorganised the structure of the software. Did it need changing? We’re people complaining that a swipe to the right was just so illogical to even think of?

Rang Google nexus support and the first thing They asked was have I installed the new update. Tried rebooting in safe mode, nothing happened. Now I have been advised to factory reset. Sounds a little over the top to fix a problem like this though. So I guess I just got to wait for 5.1 now…. Roll on. Thanks for android raping me!

Same problem here. Nexus 7 sluggish, started before the update, but now its awful. I think this is Google’s way to say buy a new tablet. Software implemented scheduled obsolescence.

Updated my nexus 10 to lollipop two days ago. With Android 4.4.2 and later 4.4.4, the Nexus 10 was freezing and rebooting at least once per day. In addition, bluetooth services were terrible. I could not effectively use both my microsoft blue tooth mouse and my bluetooth keyboard at the same time. Hitting a key on the keyboard would sometimes results in multiple key entries (like dozens). It drove me crazy. With Lollipop, both of these problems seem to have disappeared. The tablet is running smoothly and without glitches. Bluetooth is finally working as it should have in the first place. Lollipop looks nice and I really like the merging of the notifications and settings menus. Very nice so far.

Battery is now holding 2 or three hours(or most of time, less) in Nexus 4 on wifi. And the phone is heating like a oven even when using wifi!

    No problems.
However I find the new gmail layout with the Google+, red to be overpowering and annoying to the eyes.
I don’t like the new photo desplay either.
    Battery works longer as promised.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD LOLLIEPOP. Made the mistake and i hate it with a passion. It seem like Google are trying to look like and go down th Apple style UI which i hate and frankly is not nice to use or look at.
Hate the new swipe and then put in the pin , why ??? then it defaults to the contact diary , again why ??
Apps don’t work and useful features and short cuts are now gone and have to go into settings.
My biggest hate is the notifications drop down window , i liked the old version that scrolled along the top but now have this window that blokes the top part of the screen.
Well done google programmers you have made a great phone ( Nexus 5 ) and nice UI Kitkat into a slow unstable pile of steaming excrement .
Big clap and pat on the back google and fingers crossed that the phone bricks while still in warranty and i can get a new one that still has kitkat on it

New 5L on Nexus5 (which I love). Besides my personal view that I don’t really like the new theme and many controls switched for seemingly no good reason – everything runs, but seems slower and I get the odd App crash/hang when it was rock solid stable before. Also the battery seems to discharge much quicker, but I didn’t time trial it before the upgrade so can’t prove it. I’ll hold off the Nexus7 upgrade now based on the Nexus5 result and the notes above. Not impressed (and I usually am with Android upgrades).

Updated to 5.0 yesterday on my first gen nexus 7. Video playback is a disaster with unresponsive controls and volume adjustment not working. Loads of apps not working and loads of lag when switching between and closing apps. What’s with the PlayStation style symbols for the home and back buttons ?? Volume buttons now don’t control the volume but control notifications ?? So far this update seems like a big backwards step. My Samsung s4 running on 4.4 android is now so much more pleasant to use than my nexus 7 on 5.0. Hopefully google will give us a fix very soon until this happens if you haven’t already got 5.0 then don’t bother 4.4 is better.

I was a huge fan of Google and Nexus. I have a Nexus 5 which was a wonderful intuitive responsive device that really made communication in my business and life a pleasure.
Then I downloaded Lollipop. What a profound disappointment! I find the interface confusing. Unlocking the phone now takes two operations instead of one. Navigation is different. I have to relearn this device all over again, which sucks because I really liked it the way it was. I had avoided updating calendar and mail because I didn’t care for the changes. Little did I know that upgrading the OS would also upgrade all the apps whether I wanted it or not.
The color scheme alone gives me a headache. Its design colors are right out of a pre-school toy box. WTF? Are there any grown ups working at Google?
My Nexus 5 is now programmed to annoy! There is some glitch that causes it to emit spurious bleeps and popping noises even when I’m not using it.
I never thought I would say about my beautiful Nexus 5 – What a piece of sh!t.
Come on Google! Redeem yourself by giving me a way back to the interface I was happy with.

Sandy, I was going to write about this separately but you’ve nailed all of my issues in a single comment. Like you I’ve got a Nexus 5 and had the 3 & 4 in their time as well and have always loved them.

It seems that most of my most common actions now need more taps than before and, worst of all, the calendar has gone from absolutely excellent to almost unusable. Losing the scrollable month view and having to turn the phone to look at the week view is terrible. Also getting stuttering movements between screens, a longer boot, the phone app being harder to use and the Camera app neutered down so that it doesn’t flow well into a gallery mode have all lowered its utility.

Our company is in the business of enterprise applications for mobile and we’re all quite surprised at how big a mistake Google has made here. I was considering a Nexus 6 but will probably look at the interfaces on the Samsung Note and other phablets as well now because I can’t see myself living with this.

Oh my beautiful Nexus 5! I was so happy with it for all of four months. Then the update… I’m beyond sorry I downloaded the OTA update for my Nexus 5. My fast, smoothly functioning phone on 4.4.4 is now slow, glitchy, hangs and freezes, and generally useless on 5.0. I needed to make a time-sensitive call last night and my phone froze, went completely unresponsive. I had to restart it, but by then it was too late. I’ve had to restart my phone 10 times since installing the update only yesterday afternoon.

To add insult to injury, the interface design is horrendous. The colours are infantile, and there’s way too much white with no option to customize.
The gallery is gone! Outlook has been synced with Gmail, which is terribly terribly inconvenient.
I don’t know who Google had in mind when designing this piece of crap, but it certainly wasn’t Android users.

If you haven’t had the misfortune of downloading 5.0 yet, consider yourself fortunate and stay far away.
The only way for me to get back 4.4.4 is to find a 4.4.4 image online, completely wipe my phone, and reinstall – starting from scratch, everything gone… and that would make me a “lucky one”. If you don’t have an unlocked Google phone. That isn’t even an option.
I’m seriously considering moving to Apple.
    Way to go, Google.

Wow. These are some really really passionate responses. I am so happy with my Nexus 5 running on 4.4.4 as many did here. It really is a near perfect smart phone experience.

I wondered how google was gonna top it. I was stoked for the 5.0 update after reading positive reviews of lollipo from tech journalist articles. Shills! I even contemplated factory image install too. I am so glad I didn’t.

My OTA update notification came today. Looks like I will be ignoring this. I may stick with KitKat for remaining life of my device. Google engineers, you guys eff’d up big time. Could not leave well enough alone, could ya? I have a feeling updates will not be satisfactory.

Oh, What will replace my precious nexus 5 when I need to move on? The prospect saddens me. I am that smitten.

My deepest condolences for those who upgraded. I feel your pain.

I upgraded without checking it out. I ruined my tablet. How can we uninstall this? I am OK with. Losing my data. This is unusable. Chrome is not responding ui is not responding. It does not respond to the buttons. I just want to start over. With kit Kat even if I lose all my apps.

    To Google:
I bought my nexus 5 because I thought Samsung really screwed up my s3 on KitKat. And I’ve been so impressed with your product. I mean seriously KitKat on nexus 5 was I would say nearly perfection.
And now this. You stupid morons. You’ve lost the plot. You’ve suffered from change for the sake of change syndrome and forgotten us, the users who up until now have been massive fans. This is extremely bad for your company. I will find it hard to every trust Google again.
I’ve had the update to lollipop for only a few days and:
    1. The new notification system sucks. Don’t ever interrupt the full screen apps except for calls. The ticker was brilliant put it back. Just…. Leave it alone it was perfect.
    2. My 3-d games are now choppy. And touch screen response is terrible. Many swipe movements are lost/ignored which makes accurate gaming a terrible pain. You fools.
    3. Device just crashed today after a couple of missed calls. Wtf.
    4. Calendar, volume mute, new gmail color and refresh icon, white keyboard, media player glitches, carrier logo in top left prime real estate, no option to do things the old way, etc. All SUCK.
Google you have lost your way and I’m rolling back. Go to hell you bunch of fools.
    Goodnight I’m not happy.

Do all those cheering reviewers actually use Lollipop?

For all I know the Lollipop (Android 5) upgrade on my Nexus 5 is quite a disappointment and I wish I could go back to version 4.

    1. Unlocking the screen takes one more swipe (2 instead of 1), unless I am near a known Bluetooth device or when it recognises my face (i.e. annoyingly it does not allow for a routine gesture to unlock, because the face recognition is unpredictable).

    2. After closing an app, pressing “home”, or switching between apps it needs 3 or 6 (!) seconds to display the icons on the home screen or display the other app. Why? I was happy with the prompt (< 0.5 sec) change of display in the old version. Note: nothing wrong with my available RAM at those occurrences: between 400 and 500 Mb.

    3. Notification jungle on my " Lock screen". Have to define for each app whether I want to see notifications and whether or not they are "priority". As notifications are now on the "lock screen", this is an issue.

    4. Why did the info of my next alarm for wake-up disappear from the "lock screen" (despite giving the Alarm app notification priority). Do I really have to go to my Alarm app to check it every day?

    5. I use multiple email accounts. The most important ones I included in Gmail and others in the Android 4 emails app. In the latter I also included some of the primary (non-Gmail) accounts with direct access to the POP or IMAP server, in case I cannot use a VPN (I live in China and Gmail is currently not accessible without VPN, so whenever VPNs are also blocked, I need this as a backup route). It took me a while before I figured out the impact of Google merging the Gmail and Email app in Android 5. I was notified of unimportant emails all the time. With the merge, all sync settings ("do not sync this account automatically ") were reset to syncing every hour.

    6. My QQ app (one of the 2 most used social networking apps in China, the other one is WeChat), crashes all the time. It severely hinders my ability to communicate with business partners and my students.

    7. Apps disappeared, be prepared for wondering what app icon was previously in this – now empty – space. Like the equivalent of "People" (now "Contacts") and other apps. Could have been a smoother transition.

So, what do I like about Lollipop? The new GUI design is OK. I like the functions that are available from the " lock screen", especially the Bluetooth activation, volume control and the flashlight. I also like the predictive spelling corrections and the spelling correction options when pressing a word marked as misspelt. What is disappointing is that I still cannot add a Dutch keyboard or language to my English/Chinese input, so also in this release no spelling check for my Dutch writing (and would also like to be able to switch to German and Bulgarian for that matter).

I installed 5.0 to my 2012 nexus 7 tablet on the 13th. The boot logo ran constantly after I flashed the software. I held the power button till it rebooted, it did a few optimizations and was a little choppy for the first day or two but after that its running like a charm. What I used was the adb debugging interface, and the packages from the android developer site. It took a few hours to collect all the files and knowledge I needed for the installation but it was worth it. Battery life on my 2012 nexus 7 tablet is about 10 to 15 hours, almost a whole day on one charge. Feel free to message me for troubleshooting.

Another issue. I was wondering why my mobile data usage increased a lot. Then I noticed the exclamation mark next to my Wifi symbol. While the Wifi connection and Internet connection at my home are excellent, Lollipop decided to switch to the mobile network, because it thinks there is no internet on the Wifi. Seems that Google is pinging Google servers to check this.
But if Google servers are blocked (like in China), it assumes no internet and switches to the mobile network that also cannot connect to Google servers …
It means that Wifi has become unusable, unless you are on a VPN

Greetings. My Nexus 7 2012 works great on lollipop without wifi! When you open wifi after a day not using it your device will take about half an hour for downloading upgrades and sync. After that it will work OK again. And another thing….if you want more speed you will have to uninstall now launcher! It eats a lot of memory…that’s why google dindn’t include it in the lollipop upgrade for our nexus 7 2012. So…that’s it! Start wifi and let it be for a half an hour or 40 minutes and then it will work good again…

My Nexus 4 popped up the Upgrade available notice for 5.0 but I decided to wait a week to give a few apps that I use a chance to add support for 5.0. A couple days later the update offer disappeared and my phone now says 4.4.4 is up to date. It was never offered on my Nexus 7.

Did google pull it due to all the bug reports? I’ll be waiting for 5.01 I guess.

IMO it’s better not to install Android 5 at all: my Nexus 5 becomes laggy, that wasn’t an issue at all with KitKat. I also have some doubts if google designer thought out their ideas of lollipop well, most decision they made are highly questionable.

  76. Don't install it!!!

    11/23/2014 at 6:33 am

Anybody knows how to get rid of Google Photos? I don’t want any application uploading my pictures to the social shit, wrongly call social networks, and now there is no other choice. I want software to be compartmented not interconnected doing things you don’t know it is doing. Lollypop is gross, and Android is evolving to the worse. I used to be highly customizable and now the customization is going away. Has anyone tried Mozzila OS? Can I install it over a Nexus 5? Thx.

I had the same problem. You have to sign in to your google acct from a computer, then you have the option of deleting the pics. Don’t know why you can’t just do this from tblt or phone, but this is what Google Tech told me to do.

I wish I had not installed it. Preferred old notifications, and this new keyboard is terrible. Visually ugly and harder to see. Worst of all, my internet (when I can actually get a connection) is ridiculously slow. Was away over the weekend and couldn’t get weather app, Maps, or Facebook to work at all, everything was “no data” or “no connection” whether WiFi was switched on or off. Only time internet works is at my house, which renders Maps/GPS basically useless.

Received 5.0 before hearing about the issues. On 2012 N7, VERY SLOW, laggy. Some functions simply do not work! Opening apps takes forever, video during games is stuttery/freezes. Some apps close without warning! Tablet shuts down and restarts on it’s own! Widgets disappear in landscape. Missing pixels in screen in landscape! Absolutely HORRIBLE! Just glad I didn’t get the update on my two other 2013 tablets!!!! Downgrading to KitKat immediately!

I installed the lollipop on my 2012 Nexus 7 the day before yesterday trusting Google as always. What an error that turned out to be. My tablet started lagging, home page trembling, wall paper half black, then horror of all horrors I switched it off and now it refuses to start back up no matter what I do. Called Nexus support team for a fix; they said it will cost 200 dollars…imagine for something that was not my fault… What do they think a new Nexus would cost???? I am now extremely angry because I lost all personal data on it. I knew it was going to crash, but before I could back up the data…the darn thing just died on me. A word to the wise>>>> keep away from the bitter tasting lollipop. They should have never sent an upgrade before kinks were worked out on old systems. I enjoyed my Nexus sooooo much….

I installed using fastboot in Ubuntu 14.04 on my Nexus 5 device and Lollipop runs amazing. The only apps that didn’t work are apps that weren’t updated for ART or the apps servers weren’t updated for Lollipop. I do run into some network problems though but that could just be a bug in the new radio as I tend to lose reception quite often. A lot of the times after updating to a new OS it is a good idea to factory reset(letting the phone first do is first boot) before you start loading up apps and using the phone. Thought I’d throw in my 2 cents on the topic.

    • Neekapp

      11/27/2014 at 2:49 pm

Forgot to mention why its a good idea to do a factory reset with Lollipop over/after the OTA update. Lollipop mounts itself differently to the internal storage device then with the previous KitKat and could be the cause of a lot of issues. A factory reset should mount the Lollipop system correctly to the internal storage of your Nexus 4,5,7,10 etc.

Could be a problem with how the radio.img flashed on the phone. OTA updates are very iffy in my opinion. Do a fastboot update with the factory image from Google and Lollipop will run fine on your device.

For two years, I was so happy with my beautiful Nexus 4. Never gave me a problem, worked beautifully until yesterday. I upgraded to Lollipop, and my phone is now useless to me. My gallery is gone, calendar is crap, and I have zero, zip, Nada email app. I press icon for email, it gives me message that it has been moved to Gmail app, I press Gmail, and message returns that Gmail stopped working. I disappointed & frustrated with Google for pushing out crappy, unstable upgrade full of bugs! I really Dont want to do a factory reset. Can someone advise on how I can get back to KitKat?

For those of you having incredible difficulties with the OTA update of Lollipop on your device here is how to update to Lollipop or downgrade back to KitKat via fastboot method using adb tools. This method is far better for updating as in my opinion OTA updates are garbage and are the cause of most of the issues everybody is having. I have done fastboot updates on my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 first and second gen and they all run incredible on Lollipop. Lollipop is a great update in my opinion for speed, battery life, and even for the display. Only apps that don’t work are the one that aren’t updated for ART.

Now with how to update via fastboot since this article didn’t say how to do it but just said not to sideload if you’ve never done it. The fastboot method is manual method of flashing Android to a device and will work on Windows/Mac/Linux.

*You will lose all data on your device and suggest a back up of everything you need. If you backup everything to Google and pictures to Dropbox you should be fine.*

    1. Download adb tools with fastboot from Google or find yourself the slimed version from the XDA Forums.
    2. Download your factory image from Google Factory Images website.
    3. Extract all the zips/tgz files to the adb folder where fastboot.exe can be found also extract the image-device.zip. The image-device.zip extracted from the tgz file is what holds the system.img etc.
    4. Enable Developer Options and USB Debugging. Do so by tapping Build Number 7 times in the About Phone section.
    5. Once all that is done plug device into computer via USB cable
    6. Open a comand prompt/terminal window and change directory to the adb tools folder where you have placed the extract Google Images and where fastboot.exe is located.
    7. You have to boot into the bootloader and can be done easily by holding the Power + Volume Down or by typing into the command/terminal adb reboot-bootloader Once at the bootloader we can now start the fastboot process.
    8. Now your at boot loader it is now simply just a typing game of simple commands:
First you need to unlock your bootloader *Warning this will erase all data on the phone so make sure you have backed up pictures and contacts* here are all the steps:

    fastboot oem unlock bootloader

fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-hammerhead-hhz12d.img *hammerhead is for Nexus 5 make sure you type in the bootloader.img for your device*

    fastboot reboot-bootloader

fastboot flash radio radio-hammerhead-m8974a-2.0.50.2.21.img *hammerhead is Nexus 5 make sure you type in the radio.img for your device*

    fastboot reboot-bootloader

    fastboot flash system system.img

    fastboot reboot-bootloader

    fastboot flash userdata userdata.img

    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

    fastboot flash boot boot.img

    fastboot erase cache

    fastboot flash cache cache.img

    fastboot oem lock bootloader

These steps taken can let you update or downgrade to any new or previous versions of Android via the fastboot method and is a much better way than OTA. I also recommend after your device does its first boot up and started to do a factory reset just as a precaution. You can use this method for loading Jellybean, KitKat, and the newer Lollipop.

I’ve come to love Lollipop as flashing it fastboot method hasn’t given me any problems at all really. Give it a shot and I hope you don’t run into any problems. I’ve given an easy how to guide and don’t take responsiblity if you brick your device. I’ve done this method myself in this order numerous times on the devices I own and for friends and families devices.

Nexus 7 2012, was hoping lollipop would speed up my KitKat laggy experience…. Oh was I wrong!!! Apps regularly crash once they actually decide to open, FB only works if there’s an ‘F’ in the month, videos jitter n jump, email is exasperatingly slow – and why does it all have to be linked to Gmail now???? – I’ve now installed BlueMail and its great and will probably be wonderful once my Nexus is finally running again, I can recommend it. I’m now looking into a factory reset or going the unlock boot loader with adb tools route…. Do the gods at google actually try their updates on all their devices???? Doesn’t look like it to me!

    Using Nexus 4
    After updating to 5.0
    1. my internet traffic starts to spend mb extremly. I do nothing, but traffic flows. When I starts to check where is the problem, it shows, that System traffic spends so many Megabytes. Why? What app or system issue is it, that sends so many internet traffic all time????
    2. Battery life time – decreases
    3. No more Gallery. That is very bad thing. Why this update take off gallery???
    4. Lost all my e-mails that was added wtih other account, not gmail. That is not funny!!!!
    5. How to downgrade this update?

Nexus 7 adb update, meh. Don’t like calendar, pop ups rarely work.

Nexus 5, uninstalled, back to my custom kit Kat.

That’s my issue, I use custom ROM’s, so shiny new updates to official ate a step backwards for me. Personally, I think they were trying to do way mitosis did with Windows 8, lousy color themes.

I have downloaded 5.0 and my tablet is almost unusable. It suddenly shuts itself off frequently. Is there any way to fix this?
