Windows 10 Problems: Wait to Upgrade for Now

Published

on

Microsoft’s free Windows 10 upgrade is all most PC users can talk about this summer. Announced earlier this year and released on July 29th, the update includes course corrections for features that debuted in Windows 8.1 and huge functional upgrades for Windows 7.

Among the Windows 8.1 upgrades that it gets right is the new Start Menu. Instead of forcing everyone to stare at a giant screen full of Live Tiles, Windows 10 has a Start Menu for notebooks and desktops that don’t have touch. Apps downloaded from the Windows Store are no longer full screen affairs. They now sit in windows, resizable with just a click and a drag of the mouse pointer. Windows 10 starts faster and has more power user features compared to Windows 7. For example, Windows 10 lets users snap four different apps to their screen and create multiple desktops for organizing everything that they’re working on.

Eventually, everyone eligible to get the free Windows 10 upgrade should take advantage of it. There are tons of useful features and upgrades. After nearly two weeks of continued use I think that users shouldn’t download the free Windows 10 upgrade yet.

Windows 10 Problems – Upgrade Issues Persist

My very own free Windows 10 upgrade went as well as Microsoft and I could hope for it to. Coming from Windows 8.1, I downloaded the Windows 10 media creation tool so that I wouldn’t have to reserve the upgrade. Within two hours my Surface Pro 3 was ready to get things done on. There wasn’t a single hiccup. Upgrading a Dell XPS 13 went well too.

I can’t say the same has been true for other machines. Windows 10 upgrade problems seem rampant. Microsoft is delivering the free Windows 10 upgrade through its long-running Windows Update system. In some cases Windows Update either runs into issues downloading the update, or simply connecting to Microsoft’s updates when you purposely try to perform the update process. On other machines, the Windows 10 upgrade stops while in progress, forcing you to go back to your old version of Windows.

An attempt to upgrade a mid-range desktop PC ended in a boot-loop loop a few days ago. Trying to upgrade a Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet with Intel Processor ended in cryptic, “Something Went Wrong errors.” The comments in GottaBeMobile’s Windows 10 Upgrade problems breakdown is filled with users all trying to figure out why their system just isn’t working the way the way it should. Microsoft’s own Answers forum is filled with upgrade issues from users.

Windows 10 Problems – Everyday Annoyances

Even when users do manage to download the Windows 10 upgrade they’re not out of the clear. Every piece of software has bugs and issues that engineers don’t find until the software has been tested in the real world.

I’ve downloaded the Windows 10 upgrade and completed the install process on a Microsoft Surface Pro 3, Dell XPS 13 and an entry-level HP Pavilion notebook that originally came with Windows 10. The benefits of Windows 10 are evident on all of them. Better notification management, fast start-up times, the Cortana personal assistant are highlights.

Each of these have some consistent bugs too. Sometimes these issues are minor. Cortana, will fail to launch correctly or the Start Screen/Start Menu will completely fail and I’ll have to open it again. Those need to be fixed but aren’t horrible.

10 Things to Love About Windows 10 (7)

The truly horrible issues I’ve found are directly related to essential tasks. Windows 10 depends on apps available through the Windows Store for most of its functionality. Microsoft’s plan is to provide upgrades for these apps. Arguably, they are the highlight for Windows 8.1 upgraders. These new apps are miles beyond what Microsoft offered before.

Though stuffed with features, Mail and Calendar are plagued with issues. Periodically, Mail will forget your account credentials, forcing you to choose “Fix Account” before you can check your email. What makes it annoying are the false positives, the times when you get an alert asking you to fix an account that isn’t broken. Sometimes Mail and Calendar will fail to launch at all, forcing you to restart your Windows 10 notebook or tablet. Every so often a website I open or a program I launch will suddenly bog down my system, slowing progress on what I’m doing to a crawl.

Windows 10 Problems – What You Should Do

The free Windows 10 upgrade solves real problems for real people. There are features to love for every kind of user. You should download it – eventually.

For now, hold off on downloading Windows 10. The Windows 10 problems that I and others are seeing are too widespread to ignore. Bugs are one thing, not being able to check your email or activate your copy of Windows are another. Microsoft has some bugs and issues that they absolutely need to deal with before you go installing this on your machine. Give it a few more weeks, maybe Microsoft will have these issues sorted out by then.

I successfully upgraded my Windows 8.1 HP PC to Windows 10
The only bug I’ve found is that sometimes after rebooting, Windows will turn on show hidden files and protected operating system files. So, I have to go into File Explorer, Folder Options and uncheck them.

I didn’t have any problems with the upgrade; HOWEVER, a few days later the Start Menu failed – coming up with a critical error stating that I need to log out and log back in so it could fix the error! It didn’t! This was on my backup laptop which is a Panasonic i5 Toughbook. Then when I went to reverse the upgrade, it told me that because I had made some account changes on the machine a reversal was impossible. So, I had to do it the old fashion way and restore the Windows 7 back onto the machine from backups!

Though I love the new interface, to say the least – I will wait a while before trying it again!

“Among the Windows 8.1 upgrades that it gets right is the new Start Menu.”

Another paid for by Microsoft review. Windows 7 Start Menu is still far better on the desktop than this beta version of a Start Menu in 10. In particular the All ‘Apps’ list is obviously targeted for a touch device where the swipe of a finger will send you scrolling through the list. But so few programs are visible on the screen and scrolling through the list looking for your desired program with a mouse on a desktop is tortuous. And of course. Microsoft won’t let you customize the All Apps portion of the start screen. Why do all apps need to be represented with a tile?

I never had any problems before the update! Now I can’t get on steam, minecraft, certain websites, I wish I had waited! Really annoying!

well, I have uploaded windows 10, now I have not use of my computer. When I start it up it say welcome Robert, then just blinks, I can not access anything. Call to Micro soft help line stated that there was a two hour wait. I hung up. so much for free upgrade. I will properly have to take it into the shop to get it fixed. Just does not seem fair for big companies to do this to the working public

Cortana still keeps interfering with the Taskbar Search. Only way I found to fix this is to open task manager and kill the Cortana Service – it just restarts anyway – but Search does work again. For a while anyway. About time MSFT pulled collective fingers out and fixed this annoyance.

BEWARE of Windows 10 if you have a large amount of photos. My folders stayed but random files were completely deleted from my external hard drive, and my carbonite mirror image. I have already had a
computer engineer try recovery and 2 hour with carbonite. I am now waiting for a higher level of carbonite to try to find my photos. I have already reversed back to Windows7 and now my email account has been flooded with over 500 old messages or duplicates of ones I haven’t read (about 40) and I cannot delete the duplicates. My computer is running very slowly now. This just might force me to Apple.

Windows 10 has been a disaster. Wait at least 6 months, then maybe, just maybe, give it a go. Actually my real advice would be to get a Mac.
I made the mistake of “upgrading” from Windows 8.1. After a few days I got the “Critical error…Start menu not working”. Phoned Microsoft and put on hold for over an hour before finally getting a Filipina who was very polite and attentive but completely out of her depth. After several hours with her things were even worse. She called back next day and we spent some more futile hours before she admitted defeat and escalated it to Level 2.
Next day I got a call from India and they guy said I would need to do a full Reset, losing all my apps and data. Great.
I reluctantly followed his advice and purged my PC, and hopefully ended up with a clean Win 10.
He said he would call back in 45 mins. 5 hours later he called, just as I was going to bed.
After all this I now had the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE problem where it starts up, displays a message, then reboots again. Endlessly. I got hold of them again and a woman told me I had to create a boot-up USB, and just started telling me what to do before saying she had to leave, but someone else would call back. They didn’t.
I had to take the laptop back to ASUS because the Win10 reset had completely stuffed the boot sector. They re-imaged it to basic vanilla Windows 8, and said I would have to do all the updates on that before upgrading to 10. So far three attempts to update have all failed with error 80248007. The link for help on this displays “We couldn’t find any results”. Nice one.
My PC has been out of action for 10 days, and no progress in sight.
Microsoft have lost the plot. If I weren’t so heavily invested in Windows I would have jumped ship years ago.
    BE WARNED!!

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, my computer freezes up when ever I use the internet. It is highly frustrating!! I have to restart my computer just to get back on the internet but then it often freezes up again before I am back on. Sometimes my windows programs freeze up too.
