Windows 7 Gear Getting Ready to Roll Out. Who’s Buying?

Published

on

shopping_linesI would imagine that things have been pretty quite lately in the computer sections of Best Buy and online. Smart Shoppers who are looking for new notebook, netbook, or desktop have most likely put purchases off until October 22, the day that Windows 7 is officially released. I’m wondering if we’ll see a sudden surge in purchases and I’m wondering who among our GBM readers is anxiously awaiting to whip out their credit cards and pull the trigger on a new machine. I’m also wondering if you’re planning on standing pat for a bit and just upgrading your current machine. Or, are you sticking with XP or Vista? I don’t think we’ll see lines at stores but I’m sure retail outlets, Microsoft, and OEMs hope that next week will be a big week for them.

So, let us know in the comments if you’re in the market for a new machine and what you’re thinking about. Let us know what your upgrade plans are or are not. Is touch a part of your upgrade path? We’re anxious to hear.

I’m planning to upgrade my desktop from vista to winows 7. My net book is already running windows 7 release canidate and I’ll keep using that until it expires. I’m holding off on replacing my tablet pc until I can buy on with windows 7 preloaded.

Since my HP TX2000 died a couple of months ago I’ve been waiting until Oct. 22 to get a new tablet. I’m thinking about that Gateway tablet that was recently leaked. My wife has a Gateway tablet running Vista that I probably won’t upgrade because I don’t want to mess up her stuff.

I have a Technet subscription, so I’ve already got Windows 7 on my systems and won’t be buying any new hardware, but I have some family that will be looking to buy over the holiday season.

I’m really hoping to convince as many people as possible to upgrade to Windows 7 either directly or by way of new systems. I’m that confident in the OS, but it’s also the best economic stimulus plan… behaving as consumers!

The $30 price tag is hard to resist if you’re a student. I’ll probably end up upgrading my tx2000.

Oh, and Peter. Good call with the wife’s machine. Remember hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

I’m running on Windows 7 RC right now, and cannot go back! I actually purchased a Thinkpad x200 tablet yesterday. Wanted to wait for 7 to come out so it’d come preloaded, but there is a free upgrade anyway and Lenovo had a great sale! There are 3 desktops in my home and one other laptop, all of which I plan on upgrading.

I’m purchasing windows 7 home premium for my TC1100 and reluctantly switching back to Vista on the X61t.

Have been running Windows 7 RTM x64 on an X61T and on two 5-yr. old Dell desktops since August. Probably the best OS release from Microsoft yet.

@Steppenwolf – what went wrong on your X61T?

I have been back to trying life with slates–an i440d as my main computer for everything and a motion ls800 as a mobile note taking machine.

But I am back to many times needing to run out and do some writing and even though I can hook up a keyboard . . .

I use slates a lot for note taking and paper grading and much prefer that to convertible except I also write!!!

So I guess I just have to add a portable laptop then. I know the insides suck, but for size and weight and good looks of a sony vaio x—I may just do that.

I’m running Win7 RTM on three platforms already (2 tablets and a desktop, ranging in age from ~2 years old to ~5 years old), so I guess that indicates where I stand.

Interestingly, I’m still running Vista on one platform primarily so I can answer questions about it in the forum. After next week, however, I’m very likely to be 100% Win7…!

I will be upgrading some existing computers (Via pre puchase when price was low.)

I am considering one new system and decided to wait for Win 7. I’m waiting to see the new systema that come out and the proce breaks on the existing viat machines that will occur. If I get a vista computer I will update to 7 before installing any apps.

I hope here are som new tabletPCs announced. (Pen or Pen and touch, not just touch)

I’m running Windows 7 on my TC4400 for three weeks now, as I could get it via msdn-aa (needed a bigger harddrive first, though). Had Vista on the device for two years before.

I never wanna go back! Vista was ok, but I like Windows 7 so much better!
I have an old TC1100 that still runs on XPTE, maybe I’ll take a shot and try to upgrade, just for fun.
My wife’s six year old desktop PC will stay with XP, of course.

Anyway, I recommend Win7 to everyone running Vista by now!

My daughter is heading off to Australia and so we are planning to purchase a new laptop for her yet we were waiting until Windows 7 was officially released. She is as mentioned, leaning toward a laptop but I am attempting to steer her toward a TabletPC with touch.

I’ve only put Win 7 on my older machines (both portables). My desktop has run fine with Vista ever since I built it many years ago. I actually installed Win 7 RC on a seperate partition but haven’t looked at it since, mainly due to the horrendous amount of programs and settings I need. When the trial of Win 7 runs out I’ll probably buy 2 copies for my Tablets but leave the desktop as is.

Think “Bluetooth” for your next slate (or buy a keyboard/mouse with a bluetooth dongle). I use bluetooth with my tablet — great stuff.

The only problem is I don’t travel with my keyboard/mouse unless I already know I’ll need them. I have a usb mouse/keyboard at school for when I need them.

Scott–thanks—it is not the usb, that seems as easy to plug in as bluetooth is to pair etc, just the small inconvenience that seems to matter of not having the keyboard built in

    besides I sorta look for excuses . . .

Fyi I also am running windows 7 RC on all my computers and tablets

My flagship desktop’s already been upgraded, courtesy of a free party pack. Now I’m wondering what to do with the Vista Ultimate 64-bit OEM license originally purchased for that machine, as no other computer I own is even 64-bit-capable.

As for my TC1100, though…that entirely depends on whether or not my SketchBook Pro pressure sensitivity woes get fixed. That’s the only reason there, really.

My desktop currently has Vista, but will get Win7 as soon as my pre-order arrives from Amazon. My netbook is running Win7 RC (dual boot with Eeebuntu) and will until that expires. After that I’m undecided.

Yes, I want Fujitsu to come out with a new P1640 as soon after 22 Oct as possible; like 23 Oct. I want it to be a convertible tablet (detachable keyboard good but not essential), w/ new wacom capacitive multi-touch and pen daylight screen, about the same size screen as before (8.9+-), last all day min., light – 1.8 lbs max., thin, cool, good cpu & graphics, display port, and web cam.

If Fujitsu (or HP) doesn’t have it out by Christmas, I’ll be disappointed.

If only they would make these 1600 series affordable…
$1,600 for a touch screen is pretty expensive

Building, not buying a new Win 7 32 bit OS PC.
