Windows Phone 8 Release Date Pegged for November

Published

Windows Phone 8 handsets may not launch until November of this year.

According to Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet, devices running Microsoft’s new, and highly anticipated, Windows Phone 8 Apollo software may not arrive on shelves until November.

While Microsoft hasn’t confirmed anything, Foley has it on good authority that Windows Phone 8 will not reach its RTM build until September which could mean that it might not show up on an official level until November.

No specific date in November has been mentioned so the entire month appears to be wide open.

Windows Phone 8 may not launch until November.

If true, this could mean that Microsoft will launch its first Windows Phone 8 devices after Apple launches its iPhone 5. Verizon has hinted that the iPhone 5 could launch sometime in Q4 of this year, and as of right now, October seems like the likely launch month.

This also means that Microsoft will have to fall back on its current lineup of phones until then as no current Windows Phone device will see the upgrade to Windows Phone 8.

Select Windows Phone devices that are out on shelves right now will be getting a stripped down version of Windows Phone 8 called Windows Phone 7.8 which will bring a limited number of features to the table, including Windows Phone 8’s new Start screen.

Nokia has confirmed Windows Phone 7.8 for all of its Lumia devices but as of yet, we haven’t heard of the software heading anywhere else.

The Windows Phone 8 launch couldn’t come any sooner for Microsoft after Nokia revealed that it had only sold 600,000 Lumia devices in the United States.

American carriers that have already confirmed Windows Phone 8 devices include AT&T, Verizon, U.S. Cellular and T-Mobile. As for the hardware itself, Nokia, HTC, Samsung, and Huawei have all been confirmed to be manufacturing hardware that will be running Windows Phone 8 and all of its new features.

When the OS releases this fall it will finally have support for dual-core processors, and it will eventually have support for up to 64 cores in a single phone. It also Windows adds support for more screen resolutions. Future Windows Phones can use 800×480, 1280×720 (720p), or 1280×768 resolutions.

Microsoft’s new software also supports NFC right out of the box and it will have Nokia Maps as the main maps app instead of Bing Maps which are currently found on Windows Phone handsets.

I am excited for Windows Phone 8. I am going to ditch my iPhone for one of these bad boys. Windows Phone has finally caught up and has a better UI.
