Xbox Fitness Announced for Xbox One

Published

on

Microsoft is aiming to replace Nintendo’s deceased Wii Fit by introducing Xbox Fitness, which is a new online workout program that will come with every Xbox Live subscription, but will only work with the Xbox One. Essentially, the goal of Xbox Fitness is to get you in shape using a series of interactive workout videos, using the Kinect as a monitor of sorts that tracks your progress, as well as your heart rate.

Xbox Fitness will include videos that feature some popular fitness icons like Jillian Michaels, Tracy Anderson, Tony Horton of P90X, and Insanity’s Shaun T. All of them are on board with Microsoft’s innovative home fitness program, saying that Xbox Fitness “completes the puzzle” of the home fitness, adding in the progress monitoring and the Kinect’s ability to see your heart rate and tell how hard you’re pushing — something that hasn’t been possible before in home fitness.

It’s not said exactly what kind of videos that users will be able to workout to, but Microsoft says that Xbox Fitness will offer “personalized program recommendations based on your workout history and past performance, highlight the most popular workouts among Xbox Fitness users, and offer a variety of workouts, from 10 to 60 minutes in length.” And seeing as how it will feature fitness gurus from various workout programs, we’re guessing that Xbox Fitness users will be able to try out programs like P90X and Insanity, but it’s not said whether or not these separate programs will be included.

From the looks of it, Xbox Fitness will be the fitness program that the Nintendo Wii wish it had, but it seems Nintendo gave up on the whole fitness thing quickly, and pretty much ignored any hope of it continuing with the Wii U. However, if you’re looking for a new console to help you with your fitness goals, the Xbox One seems to be the best candidate right now.

Microsoft says that Xbox Fitness will launch in time for the holiday season, but didn’t provide a specific timeline. Xbox Fitness will be free to Xbox One owners with a Live Gold membership, and current subscribers will be able to take advantage of Xbox Fitness as well, as long as their memberships are valid through December 2014.
