Xbox One Plagued by Disc Drives Issues on Launch Weekend

Published

on

It appears that a small number of Xbox One users can’t load their disc-based games thanks to the failure of their console’s Blu-ray drives.

Reports of the disc drive issue began surfacing Friday afternoon. Though the issue seems to effect only a small number of the total consoles Microsoft already delivered to retail stores and users, the issue gained widespread notoriety after YouTube user CrowbCat posted a video made up of other’s YouTube videos about the issue.

That video begins with CrowbCat and other users inserting discs for retail games they’ve purchased. After a few seconds of silence, the console begins emitting a high-pitch sound that can only be described as the sound a disc would make if it were being scratched inside the console itself.

You can still order an Xbox One release date console from Amazon, starting early Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell just how many Xbox One users have gotten their device home only to realize that their its Blue-ray drive is malfunctioning. The Xbox One uses the slot-loading Blu-ray drive to load games purchased from third-party retailers like GameStop, Walmart and more. The device also allows users to watch Blu-ray movies once they’ve downloaded the Blu-Ray application from the Xbox App Store.

For its part, Microsoft has acknowledged the hardware issue. In a statement sent to Polygon, the company also indicated that only a “very small number” of users were being affected by the hardware issue.

“The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers. We’re working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program. Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers.”

Microsoft says users who contact it through its support channels will have the option of requesting an immediate replacement for their Xbox One – without having to send in their console in first. This means that users should get their replacement a lot faster than if they’d requested that Microsoft send them a box and label for their broken console first.

I don’t think you can say “Plagued by Disc Drives Issues” when there have been less than a dozen confirmed reports out of over 1,000,000 sold consoles. I would think “Plagued” would apply to at the very least 1/4 of them. Not one out of every 50,000. The same thing goes for the PS4 launch. Sony confirmed around %1 failure rate. Still not even close to an important percentage. It is expected that a massive launch like these will have a negligible amount of issues, but if they are kept at a small number and the company making it responds, we can not consider it, much of an issue at all. I can tell you that I have not yet had any issues at all with either, and no one I know has had any problem.

Less then a dozen. Your kidding right? It does seem to be a small number, but in the Kotaku video alone with a small compilation shows 16 failures. Both launch consoles have some issues. Nothing like RROD last gen though so far. So we should be happy about that. But no way its less then a dozen failed drives.

While i am not quite sure if my xbox one is one of the “less than a dozen confirmed” but the hours of on hold time i have experienced with both the online support as well as the phone support begs to differ that there may in fact be less than a dozen problems. just my thoughts
