Power Management and Mobile Devices: A Plea

Lora Heiny, The First Lady of the First Family of Tablet PCs, has an interesting post, actually an interesting plea, on What Is New. Mobile computing users are always concerned and aware of power managment and battery life, and always looking for ways to improve. Lora’s plea is aimed at developers as she urges them to take advantage of energy-smart features in Windows Vista. She points to MSDN’s lab that offers info on the subject, and curiously points to an article that suggests that power management is a tax that ISVs aren’t ready to pay yet.

Here’s my $.02. Pay the tax. It will take some time, I’m sure it will take some time for developers to get on the bandwagon, but they should do so. Otherwise, I believe we’ll start seeing a new category in reviews of mobile computing software as reviewers start making that another benchmark as to whether or not software is worth your while. Unfortunately mobile computing and power management are synonomous and always will be. Now that there is some software help, it needs to be taken advantage even if we have increasing hardware advance.
