A Closer Look At The PowerMat Wireless Charging System

Posted by | 01/08/2009 | 9 Comments

GBM reader Harv asked us to take a closer look at the PowerMat Wireless charging system and being the tech junkies we are, we were more than happy to oblige. What we saw at CES 2009 Unveiled was just a scratch on the surface of a technology that inductively shocked us (pun intended). Not only can all of your electronic devices be charged wirelessly, home appliances can also be powered with embedded or implanted mats within a surface and the receiver mounted on the appliance itself. Scott Eisenstein, Vice President at PowerMat, gave us a quick tour of the products available or soon-to-be-available. We hope Harv enjoys the pics and vid following the jump!

hmm, i wonder how much the conversions costs in terms of efficiency…

that is, how many watts are wasted going from electric to magnetic and back again…

This is some of the coolest technology I’ve seen developed in a long time, and I can’t wait to learn more about it. I definitely want to know more about its energy efficiency and effectiveness, but the demonstrations alone are very impressive.

I can’t wait to learn more about this too. It seems like a good idea to a common and annoying problem but I need to know more.

from what i’ve seen at the CES, the powermat has the same efficiency as the regular chargers. it also has the added benefit of being able to recognize full battery and stop charging, even when the device is still on the mat.

I’m excited about this concept and am looking forward to trying it for myself when it hits market. 90% efficiency and flexibility, no more cord clutter and no more carrying around multiple cords everywhere I go – sign me up!

What a great idea Powermat is! Eliminating the mess of cords is very appealing. Looking forward to checking this out.

What a great product! Any idea on price point? I want it!

This is excellent. I hate the clutter of cords, and the idea of charging the laptop by just laying it on the desk is very interesting. However, I would be happy with just the travel mat size for now. Will be fun to watch this company.
