Video: Intel’s New MID Form Factors

bydmars4I knew after we posted about Intel’s announcments at the IDF yesterday that video would surface. I also know it would surface at jkkmobile’s site. Sure enough it did. The video (after the jump) shows a few of the new form factors that are available, including a phone from BYDmars running XP.

Interesting.

    I don’t really like the MID form factor.
    It’s too small to be useful (thumb QWERTY keyboard, tiny screen, short battery life, …) and on the other hand it’s also too large (does not fit in a pocket like a mobile phone (whereas even the latest phose are huge (iPhone, HTC), can’t really replace a mobile phone, …)
    So in the end I still need a mobile phone + the mid device + a notebook/tablet.
    If they improve the battery life to 24h, add a useful keyboard (a dream would be if they stop using QWERTY and start using a one handed layout like the FrogPad), add a laser projector and make it thinner, I might also buy one because then it will replace my mobile phone :)

    Great. Another showcase of MIDs that will never reach market. Honestly, if it wasn’t backed by Intel, wouldn’t the MID category be written off as vaporware by now? Get them into stores already.

    Vaporware? OQO 02 MID has been out for years and even running Vista… oh right that was based on a VIA processor ;)

    Actually what I thought was funny in the video is that on the first display stand of products on form-factor looks exactly like a bottle of water! Now I can’t wait so see when that one comes out…

    To be fair OQO didn’t market the 02 as a MID, and obviously, Intel didn’t show it off last year. Sumocat’s main complaint is that last year, Intel promised a bunch of products most of which did not materialize on the market. Pointing out that the OQO Model 02 has been out on the market since 2007 doesn’t actually rebut that complaint since it wasn’t something that Intel showed off. Also, it predates the terms MID and UMPC. (Of course, since the 02+ is Atom based, Intel shows it off at every opportunity as a MID.) Pointing out that the Aigo is out on the market would make a better rebuttal. However, that’s just one of the many products Intel touted last year.

    This isn’t to deny your point that MIDs predate Intel and are, in fact, out on the market. It doesn’t seem like there are a lot of them though, or at least they aren’t marketed as such. e.g., The iPod touch strikes me as a perfectly fine MID, but Apple doesn’t really sell it as such.

    The Aigo is buyable.
    It needs a bigger battery
    The problem is the hardware inside these things requires
    bleeding-edge drivers and a nimble OS.
    They need a bigger batteries.
    And if they did it right the MIDs
    would send and receive sms at least, if not voice.
    Did I forget to mention they need a bigger battery?

    The best thing about the Aigo is it is HACKABLE,
    which makes up for just about all its shortcomings.
