Dell Latitude XT Drivers Held Hostage: Day 8

robhostageYes, we’re 8 days into the Dell Latitude XT Drivers Held Hostage and while we have some communication going on with Dell, we still know things are on some burner that can best be described as no where near the front of the oven. Rob has posted this on the Dell’s IdeaStorm site, and from whatever undisclosed detention center he and his Latitude XT are hold up in, he’s asking for folks to go and vote it up.

It’s finally here! The N-trig drivers is released today!!. It’s on N-trig website right now. Although it said on the website that, the drivers is for windows 7 RC but the files I downloaded indicated that it is for RTM. I posted a release note in the Dell section in the Forum. This update includes XT, XT2 and TX2.Thanks Rob for everything he did for all XT owners.

Hmmm, but this is only for multitouch. there are no windows 7 drivers on dell’s site. Can we use the vista drivers for windows 7 instead?

  3. Joe says

If you check the forums, there’s a post saying this, but all you absolutely need other than the N-trig driver for Windows 7 is provided by Windows Update. The only other important one is the Vista version of Quickset to allow for screen rotation, and that works perfectly.

  4. Rob says

that is great news!!! now we just need Dell to post them on their support site, and ensure their existing Vista drivers are Win 7 compatible. Enough of this “legacy” stuff.

btw – if you want to see why I’m pushing this issue, head over to Dell’s support site and why the XT2 got a BIOS update last month: Windows 7 enhancements. What could they be enhancing on the XT2 for better Windows 7 support that they are not enhancing on the XT?

I really really hope DELL gets it act together and treats us as DELL customers and not as DELL “consumers”; I was an early adopter and purchased the XT1 when it was just released, with the Media Base, two different Batteries, Vista Ultimate, 5 year Extended Warranty and 4 year Complete Care theft and accident coverage. I ended up paying more than 4.000 usd. So then Dell comes out with a product “revision” (XT2) and the XT1 is relegated to “legacy product”? Come on, I feel like I´ve been used as a Beta Tester and for that I´ve had to pay thousands of dollars, and now I don´t even have the right to get proper support for it.

Dell was very happy to sell me a 5 year extended warranty, but it seems that won´t matter much because now I have a legacy product? This is a computer, not office supplies. If Dell feels that several changes were needed for the XT1 fine, come out with a revised product, but don´t leave me out in the dust. This is the prize for being an early adopter and paying top dollars for supporting DELL in the development of a new technology (NTrig digitizer).

DELL, if you give Windows 7 support to the XT2 it can´t be that more difficult to do it for the XT1. This is a computer whose main attribute is the screen´s dual input technology. Now finally a proper Operating System is developed for it and we don´t get support. I used to like DELL, but lately that feeling has changed significantly.

    Frustrated and angry,

    David

It’s not just the xt. All of the older machines that are “supported” aren’t even on Dells website. I should have taken a screenshot because the page has changed. Now we have 2 catagories Basic w7 support vs actual w7 support. All of the newer E/M/xt2 laptops are “Officially Supported”. While the d830/d630/d430, older m and the like have “Basic Support”. If they don’t fix this I’ll purchase a Lenovo next time, because appearantly Dell can’t support machines that are still in support contracts, and that’s VERY IRRITATING.

I forgot to say something. The Officially Supported have a drivers tab for W7, while the Basic expects you to install Vista drivers…

  9. Rob says

exactly @thecold – this issue doesn’t just affect the XT – I’m just using the XT (since it is personal to me and others on this site) as the driving force.

This is a larger issue about Dell and their support – Basic Win 7 support through Vista divers and actual w7 support are two totally different things. I’m not suggesting Dell go back 10 years to support Win 7 on their computers, but a year or two would be a definite improvement over the current state of affairs. Lenovo is showing Dell how to treat a customer.
