MSI Tegra Tablet Will Debut Later This Year at $500

Published

on

msi_tegra_tabletMSI has announced that its Tegra based Tablet will be available in the second half of this year and be priced at $500. I’m guessing we’ll be seeing a few of these Tablet announcements over the next few months and they will all have some things in common. They will all have a release date in the second half of the year and the price point will be around $500. Apple set that price point with its announcement yesterday of a $499 starting price for the iPad.

The problem other Tablet makers may have is delivery date. Apple is claiming to be ready to go in 60 days (90 days for an iPad with 3G options) and they’ll continue to dominate the news before and after that. If the early very mixed comments about the iPad continue after the release, vendors like MSI will have a great opening. If not, they’ll be playing catch up. I’m thinking other Tablet vendors are feeling like they have a shot on the day after the myth busting.

Delivery date is definitely the problem they have. I sound like a broken record (er, corrupted MP3 to you young’uns), but the feeling I got from tablet makers at CES was that they were all waiting to see what Apple was going to do, either out of fear of being crushed or hope that Apple would show us tablets done right. Well, we didn’t quite get that, so they all held back for nothing. They could have had tablets in place on the day Apple got everyone talking about tablets. Instead, they’re going to be playing catch up with Apple’s release and, unlike Apple, they don’t already have store space reserved. It’s so frustrating.

I agree with Sumocat on this one… timing is everything, but… in this case, Apple has released a device that isn’t immediately popular, and that buys competitors some time. If they can release a “tablet done right”, I really think people will listen this time.

I love Apple for a single reason… they get people to look at technologies seriously, and competitors will finally start competing.

I want to know more about the MSI Tegra… specs are more important than looks to me, especially since the Tegra looks to be pretty on-par with the iPad… not fugly, but not a knockout gorgeous device either… it has one big bonus right from the photo though… WIDESCREEN baby! Hooray HD content!

I think the App Store is a premium over the MSI device. you can port almost all your productivity apps, games, reader software and stuff over from App Store. Your start up cost is less don’t you think

At that price are the MSI going to offer 3G?
