With regret, the Tablet PC blog shuts down

Tablet-PC-Brochure-coverThe Tablet PC  OS platform from Microsoft…anyone remember that?  It was that great operating system from Microsoft that had all the tablet functions we were all clamoring for?  Its that other system…you know, the one that isnt from Apple.

Microsoft never really put its marketing muscle behind Tablet PC.  It was just there.  Tablet fans are the ones who still talk about it and use it on their devices. Its one of the things this blog was built on.

But then, Microsoft decided to incoporate Tablet PC functionality into Vista. Ok, this was supposed to be a good thing.  Get the idea out there to the mainstream. Get people excited about it. After that, the functionality was added into Windows 7.  The idea of the Tablet PC OS shifted. It became more a touchscreen type OS versus a stylus/e-ink OS.  It looked like the end was near.

And then, this was posted:

So, what does this mean?  Well, the blog is gone.  The OS is part of Windows 7. It looks like its time for a small private service and a good old fashioned wake.

Goodbye Tablet PC.  We will miss you.

Microsoft set stringent standards which they later no longer adhered to- allowing ‘tablet pc’s’ without active digitizers.

There’s OS update was far from revolutionary and only offered support minimalistically rather than revamping an OS aesthetically and functionally for input and requiring more hardware buttons and dedicated memory space for crucial ink applications.

It’s sad to see their abandoment- and would be even worse for me to see Apple recieve all this credit and sales for a technology that’s 8 or so years old.

I laugh that my computer history (which I’ve only owned 6 laptops total). Includes a Sony Picturebook (9 inch laptop from 2000), and 3 TabletPCs. Machines that upon inception were well over the $2000 dollar mark, and difficult to come by, are now being touted around as ‘Netbooks’ and ‘iPads’ and are considered genius ideas, Tablet PCs were just too expensive when they came out.

Seriously? They did like one post a year at their height. It was never really a going concern so your assessment seems a bit odd.

Indeed, the Tablet PC team has never been active bloggers, which is a disappointment on its own… perhaps if the team had been ink blogging like Sumocat they would have gained some attention.

Or maybe it’s that they’re getting sucked into the Courier and other projects…
