Tegra Chip Problems Delay Future Tablets?

Published

on

I’m going to caveat this post by saying it is April Fools Day. That said, I don’t think this info qualifies as a prank, but I would qualify it as a rumor. According to SlashGear, there is word that NVidia is having some difficulty with its Tegra chipsets and this is going to force a potential delay in Tablet devices like the Notion Ink, the ICD Ultra, and the Compal devices. Projects based on the Tegra 2, according to this source, won’t be available until August 2010.

Again, caveats abound, here, but I have to say that I wouldn’t be surprised if these rumors have some truth to them. We all know that Tablets aren’t easy to pull off for a variety of engineering reasons (unless you go the DIY Crunchpad route). From what I’m reading we’re looking at hardware and software issues and Adobe’s Flash my play a part. Here’s hoping that things get on track.

Davies has since stated in his comments it is not an Aprils Fools joke. Of course, we’ve been burned by an “I assure you I’m not joking” joke in the past.

Much as I wish I could say it was a joke, our source was serious :) NVIDIA have since told us that Tegra is still on track, though that differs strikingly from what our source (who I do trust, and who is definitely on the inside in all this) is saying.

Still, I’m crossing my fingers that it all works out okay, since I’d love a Tegra tablet as much as the next guy!

Honestly, it was my impression the Tegra2 was always planned for around Q3. The Cortex A9 CPU they’re basing on was pretty much always said to be Q3-Q4 before it’d be ready for mass production.

Have no idea what your talking about because it’s April Fools Day. I can’t read your Blogs, Tweets, etc without thinking this is probably fake. So I never read your site on this day! I think it was about two years ago when I decided I can only use the older news sources (NYT, WG, USA Today, local news, etc) because bloggers like to play jokes on this day. So, if you have an interesting story, wait until tomorrow to post it.

Oh, and the next time the argument comes up about being real journalists, just ask if they ever post fake stories. Actually the answer to that is yes for both. But bloggers do it on April Fools day and the establishment does it all the time. LOL

@Mike aka C-141xtr, so I’m glad you stopped by on April Fools Day anyway since you don’t do that.

You caught me in my brief moment of weakness. I keep your page as 7 of 8 home pages. I remembered it was April Fools when I saw the article on the prototype iPad. I then left my comment in this thread after I realized I did not know if it was real or fake, and left your site for the day too. You just can’t be trusted on April Fools day, and for that matter neither can the other blogs. While I don’t mind a good April Fools joke or for that matter any jokes, I really don’t like them from my news sources.

What if your local news ran a story about a free iPad, and then said April Fools! Would you care that it is April Fools day or not? How could you trust their other stories? How could I trust your other stories?

This story has already been reported as false by many other news and blog sites. Tegra 2 chips have already been shipped to manufacturers and device announcements are expected in the near future.
