Say Goodbye to Snow Days Now That Online Schooling is Catching On

Published

on

Uh, oh. This won’t sit well. Looks like the Mississinawa Valley School District in Darke County, Ohio is going to use the Internet so that students can still do work when snow and ice cause schools to be canceled. I’m not sure if this is the first case of this, but it is the first I’ve heard of. In our area given geography that features both mountains and valleys we frequently have schools canceled when the mountains get precipitation and the valleys do not.

I guess it only makes sense as online courses have been offered in a number of ways for some time now. But can you imagine what this is going to mean for all those kids (and teachers) who look forward to a “snow day.”

Ah, the advances of technology.

They just have to hope for a snow AND power outage day.

One of my old high school teachers was telling me about that this summer. I’m from Colorado, and in Douglas County, the classes aren’t online, but some schools in the district require the students to turn in homework and post work for the students to do when there is a snow day. It’s as if nothing happened. It’s pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

I am from Mississinawa Vally School – I work there, this is my 26th year. We are not at all close to Columbus, Ohio. We are 2 hours west. The state line of Ohio/Indiana runs directly through the middle of our town. We are a very small community. Our total student population for preschool through grade 12 runs around 725.

You seem to be under the impression that our students are not going to get any snow days. This is not at all true. Our students are going to get 3 snow days like every other student who goes to school in Ohio. The difference comes when we get to day 4 and 5. Those are the days we will be using the internet lessons for. In past years the state of Ohio has allowed schools to have 5 snow days. This school year they reduced that to 3 with plans in the future to take those away as well. When other schools will have to actually use time later in the school year or summer to make these two days up, we will have already done that. The public is very misinformed about how this is going to work.

Those who work in education know how important it is to have the opportunity to have as many instructional days before the statewide testing that goes on in the spring is. This new and inovative concept will help achieve this goal.
