MacBook Air Threatening iPad Sales

Despite recent predictions and projections stating that sales of netbooks and notebooks are being cannibalized by the emerging consumer consumption tablet category that is being led by the popular iPad, the tablet category may be cannibalized by the ultra-portable computer segment that’s being led by the newly unveiled MacBook Air. According to analysts at Rodman & Renshaw’s Ashok Kumar, “A fully functional notebook in a very attractive form factor may be resonating more with consumers than a content consumption only device.”

The MacBook Air–the smallest version is comparable in dimensions to the iPad–costs just about the same as the high-end iPad with WiFi, 3G and GPS capabilities, and 64 GB of internal storage, but can deliver a lot more power than the consumption-centric iPad; the Air runs the full Mac OS X operating system giving it the power of a full laptop where users can not only watch Internet viewers and surf the web, but manage files and documents, create and edit spreadsheets and presentations, edit and compile videos, handle databases, and more. Because of the value proposition of the MacBook Air, its portability, and its power, the new MacBook Air could potentially take sales away from Apple’s iPad at the $1000 entry point.

The device was recently awarded a best-in-class title by Consumer Reports and delivers more performance than a netbook but with the same portability. While netbooks have underpowered graphics coupled with an Intel Atom processor, the MacBook Air has a higher end Intel Core 2 Duo processor that’s found on the base 13-inch MacBook Pro along with an NVIDIA discrete graphics processor. Long battery life and a sub-3-pound form factor, strong build quality, and a chic design all help the MacBook Air stand out.

Users can watch Internet videos, surf the web, manage files and documents, create and edit spreadsheets and presentations, edit and compile videos, and handle databases on an iPad too. And the iPad battery lasts a solid 10 hours, whereas a MAC books will only last 5.

I think the MAC book will appeal to people who are a bit more old fashioned and simply prefer a more traditional setup. If these devices canabalize each other, its a credit to Apples marketing , as well as the quality of their products.

I have both the iPad and the new MacBook Air. There’s nothing old fashion about actually having to get work done. I’ve barely touched my iPad since getting my MacBook Air.

Netbooks are cheap crappy small laptops running windows. The MBA are nothing like a netbook. not that hard to figure out really.

MBAs are overhyped, overpriced Appletard trinkets. Netbooks gets the job done at a good price, not that hard to figure out really

The announcement yesterday that Apple will continue to support Java on its real computers suggests that Apple will continue its separation between its high control model on the iPad and its freedom model on the MacBooks. Different people will go for different models, but I expect that there will be a lot of effort on both Mac and Windows to reduce the battery life differential, favoring the freedom model.

Nook Color is better for reading than iPad and better for everything else than Kindle. Nook Color is better for $249. Nook Color screen is supposed to be better (less reflective) for reading than iPad thanks to new LG screen with anti-reflection coating. It allows to watch videos, listen to the music, view Office documents and PDF’s. The Nook Color will not run apps straight out of the Android Market, but that does not mean it cannot run them. In fact, they have done a lot of tests on apps from standard Android smartphones and they pretty much run on Nook Color, which has Android 2.1 under the hood. (The Nook native interface and apps are just standard Android application layers.) Barnes & Noble special Nook SDK runs on top of the standard Android one and gives developers access to exclusive extensions and APIs for the Nook and its interface. So porting Android apps is not difficult. B&N says it is more like optimising them for Nook than porting them. If you prefer e-Ink screen, the original Nook is still available from BN.

hmm, I don’t think Macbook Air will be iPad’s threatening, I just considering the Galaxy Tab might be great rival, with the a Super AMOLED version, a 10.1-inch flavor, and a tablet-tuned Android, just hit Verizon retail for $599.99, really stunned. Well, but ipad more likely a consumer electronic, a great portable movies, videoes and game device, at least now Im sucked in movies watching on it in the help of iFunia iPad Video Converter, and now Game center, be a great game playing platform, of course the E-mail and surfing internet or do some office work on it are also handy and convenient.~~~Well, but the Galaxy Tab got its features and pros and must be on fire too, time will prove that… In a word, both are winsome, the ipad has time superiority, and is $499 for the wifi only version makes some more appealing.
