iPhone 4 Coming to Sprint in October, Not iPhone 5?

Published

on

It would appear that Sprint may not be getting the iPhone 5 in October but will instead be offering up the iPhone 4. A report from TUAW states that a Sprint Nextel associate has told them that the carrier has started briefing its employees on an iPhone 4 launch for October instead of a launch of the iPhone 5. If true, that could mean that Sprint won’t be getting the iPhone 5 until 2012, possibly during the early part of spring.

Sprint’s briefing apparently stated that the iPhone 4 would be launching in October 2011 and it would be offered with Sprint’s existing data plans and that there will be a $10 smartphone premium added. That premium is not specific to the iPhone.

Sprint

This report contradicts The Wall Street Journal’s report that Sprint would be one of the launch carriers for the iPhone 5. AT&T and Verizon are both expected to carry the next-generation iPhone when it launches.

Of course, nothing is set in stone here, but if this is true, it would obviously throw a stick in the spoke of the plans of many consumers who were hoping to get an iPhone 5 on Sprint this year especially since it was reported that the carrier would offer unlimited data plans. It’s also entirely possible that Sprint might offer both devices come October.

We’re sure there will be more info on this in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned.

Smells awful fishy to me.  Who in their right mind would buy an iPhone 4 and hold onto it for two years at the same time someone at Verizon or AT&T can get an iPhone 5?  If Sprint signed on for this, I guess they were figuring that an old iPhone is better than no iPhone at all.  My guess is that someone at Sprint wants to see how far he can get a fake story to run.

Somebody who can’t afford a $300 phone would probably find a $50 subsidized iPhone 4 quite tempting.

The only way getting an iPhone 4 would make sense is if everyone is getting the iPhone 4S.  It’s all smoke an mirrors, anyway.  I’m hoping for the Zach Morris iPhone.

A report from TUAW that was dropped by a gentleman who wouldn’t stop clearing his throat until they picked it up and works for a company we’ll call AT & Shmee… Interesting…

    I smell bogus rumor.
1.) Sprint only charges the $10 upcharge on 4G phones.  The iPhone is not 4G.
2.) Why would Apple create a 4G iPad for sprint’s wi-max network when all the other carries are using LTE.  And Sprint is moving from wi-max to LTE itself?

This would be stupid. If Sprint wants to compete at all they will offer the Iphone 5 with unlimited data plans. That is the only way they can stay ahead of the competition.
