Samsung Confirms Galaxy Note Coming to U.S., Has Shipped 1 Million Units

In a statement saying that it has shipped over 1 million units of the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note smartphone-tablet hybrid form factor device, Samsung confirms that the device will be arriving in the U.S. in 2012. Despite confirmation of a U.S. arrival, Samsung has not given specifics as to what carrier the Galaxy Note will arrive on and support, nor has it given a launch date for the U.S. debut.

The tablet, which was originally introduced in October at the IFA trade show in Germany, has gone on to ship over 1 million units in the two short months that it has been on the market.

The Galaxy Note is the latest in a series of devices that are pushing the screen-size boundary and blurring the label between smartphone and tablet. With a 5-inch screen, many will find it too big to be used as a smartphone, though the large screen is still small enough to be an extremely portable, yet slightly cramped, tablet. The Galaxy Note takes cues from Dell’s Streak 5, which has now been discontinued.

The Galaxy Note is so far only available in Europe and Asia.

The tablet-phone also takes cues from the 7-inch HTC Flyer tablet, coming with its own active digitizer stylus for pen-enabled input.

The device ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and comes with a dual-core 1.4 GHz Exynos processor. It has a micro SDHC card slot for expansion and either 16 or 32 GB of internal storage space. The Galaxy Note can support voice calls and also can connect to data connections over WiFi, 2G EDGE, 3G, 4G HSPA+, or 4G LTE networks, depending on the model or configuration.

The device was recently spotted at the FCC for U.S. regulatory approval and all indications point to a potential AT&T launch.
