CES 2012 – Nokia Going All Out on Windows Phone

There is no doubt that this marriage between Microsoft and Nokia seems, on the exterior, to be doing well. Microsoft is spending a ton of marketing money with all the Mango launch parties over the last couple months.

Microsoft and partners are pledging to spend $200 Million For Windows Phone Marketing in 2012. Brand awareness and training are said to get the push.

Last week, WP Central showed an Indian Airline Jet Airways plane with a huge Nokia Lumia 800 branded advertisement covering almost the entire rear half of the plane.

I arrived at McCarran International Airport and was greeted by enthusiastic Nokia reps holding signs advertising a free shuttle to a couple of the popular hotels, including the Venetian. Stand in long cab line and pay $40 or ride for free and learn about Nokia’s newest Windows Phone offerings for free? Free is awesome!

Nokia chartered a few double decker buses with Windows Phone tiles all over for the free rides.

They took our luggage and had custom baggage claim tickets to hand out with a bottle of water and a neat little screen wipe.

During the ride, Nokia PR reps handed out fully functional Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 demo units for the riders to check out while they went over the phones and Windows Phone basics.

It was a really well done promotion, kind of like visiting their booth while making your way to you hotel room.

I really like the blue Lumia 800, color and all!

Do you think Microsoft and Nokia are going overboard with all these promotions? Can Microsoft shed the stigma that some have around it based on the Windows Mobile days?

    Honestly since most people have never heard of Windows Phone I would say no they aren’t going too far, in fact I would dare to say that they haven’t yet gone far enough. Nokia needs to come HUGE to prove that they’re serious about the US.

    I think this is one of many great and welcome Windows Phone promotions by
    Nokia. Over time these kind of promotions can shed some of the Windows Mobile stigma.

    Windows as no chance of competiting with Apple or Android,Nokia an symbian was more like using Android phones,an thats the ecosystem Nokia should have choosen Android then you know you can do the same thing with these phones but with Windows you are losing alot of Functions an you are Restricted,Bluetooth not able to be used to send an recieve data,no micro sd card slot an having to Zune instead of Nokia player to Music on your Windows phone,so loads of Nokia buyers with leave Nokia for a Android phone instead

      I disagree completely. You are not losing any function by using a Windows 7.5 OS, I’ve just traded in my iPhone 4S 64GB in for a Nokia Lumia 800 and the Lumia with Mango 7.5 has all the main functions of the iOS system and is more intuitive to use. Also the Lumia runs as fast if not faster than my 4S. Android is laggy and buggy in comparison, constantly needing updates etc. Yes there is no micro SD card slot on the Lumia but when you have a free 25GB Skydrive account you can just stream data, music, pictures wirelessly. Nokia Music applicaton is included as well as Zune Music. Lumia also has Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive which will replace my Tom Tom GPS. Bottom line is once consumers start using WP Mango 7.5 and the tba WP Tango OS they will realise that Nokia are onto a positive start with Microsoft. One final point, the Lumia is absolutely stunning with Nokia build quality, easily competing with the glass iPhone 4. The only current downside is less apps in Windows Marketplace compared to Apple but this is expanding fast. Unless Apple offers a signficant, superior upgrade with the iPhone 5 I will keeping be staying with Nokia and Windows. If the first effort by Nokia/Microsoft collaboration, by the end of 2012 a lot of Apple and Android users will have switched to Windows Phone.
