Samsung’s New Year’s Resolution: Get Smartphones in Shape for All-Day Stamina

With many of us targeting fitness, wellness, and healthier lifestyles as part of our new year’s resolution, Samsung has an equally admirable goal that if realized, may help our smartphones become more fit to handle the challenges of our day-to-day use. The company’s goal for 2012 is to deliver smartphones with batteries that can last a full day on a single charge.

Samsung VP of Product Innovation Kevin Packingham says in an interview with CNET, “When you wake up to when you go to bed, we don’t want you feeling anxiety about your battery life.”

In an effort to deliver on its promises, Samsung says that one solution will be to move to larger batteries. That’s the same strategy that Motorola Mobility took when introducing the Droid RAZR Maxx, a smartphone that’s slightly more bulkier than the RAZR-thin Droid RAZR, but houses a more massive battery.

Other solutions include optimizing the WiFi and LTE radios along with software improvements. On Motorola’s recent smartphones, for example, Motorola had introduced Smart Actions, which help to optimize battery life by automating certain settings and functions to help maximize your battery life. Samsung’s solution will be more deeply embedded, including on the way the phone powers up LTE radios and searches for WiFi.

With new innovations driving smartphone technology in recent years, battery life will become a bigger issue than ever in the past. 4G LTE, bigger and brighter displays, faster processors, and more capabilities such as 1080p HD video recording and better cameras, will all take larger tolls on battery life.
