Motorola Droid 3 and Droid X2 Won’t Get Ice Cream Sandwich

Published

on

Last week, Motorola updated its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update schedule and while the news was good for some device owners, Droid 3 owners and Droid X2 owners saw their phones left off the list. In an effort to quell the storm, Motorola has explained why phones like the Droid X2 and the Droid 3 won’t be getting the upgrade to the latest version of Google’s software.

In a blog post, Motorola explains that these devices, presumably along with many others, won’t be improved with the update and therefore the manufacturer will not be outfitting them with the update.

Motorola says that if it can’t determine whether or not an improvement can be made, the software roll out is a no-go.

Motorola Droid 3 and Droid X2 Won't Get Ice Cream Sandwich

Here is the company’s full statement which is sure to fuel the flames even higher:

You’re not alone. Good thing we’ve got a page for that. You can get the latest software upgrade news on our refreshed page.

You may be wondering why all devices aren’t being upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Here’s the deal. We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.

Happy upgrading!

In the comment section below, many Droid X2 and Droid users have expressed their frustration with Motorola’s stance.

One commenter, Josuam, says that:

Just know my droid 3 will be my first and last motorola phone that I will use in my life!

And another, named Slandy7 states:

My Droid 3 isn’t even a year old, and Motorola has decided not to upgrade it. Phones with slower processors, less RAM, and manufacturers with fewer resources have been upgraded to ICS. This is an infuriating call by Motorola, as it was made with one factor in mind: money. This will be the last Motorola phone I ever buy, and I will certainly not recommend Motorola phones to anybody else.

Granted, Motorola did not say whether these devices would see the next major Android update but these customers do have at least one point. The phones are just about a year old coming out during the summer of last year.

The Droid X2 had also been rumored to not be getting the update.

Both phones also sport dual-core processors and similar specifications of several other phones that are getting or have already received the update so it’s easy to see why owners are peeved.

It’s possible that it’s the 512MB of RAM that is holding both of these phones back but because Motorola didn’t go into detail, owners will probably never know for sure.

In addition, Motorola and Verizon have kept the bootloaders on both phones locked which prevents owners from flashing custom ROMs.

Many are asking Motorola and Verizon to unlock the bootloader now that the phones won’t get the bump to Android 4.0 but the chances of that happening are slim to none.

That is absolutely ridiculous. My Droid X2 is less than 6 months old. I have ready so many forums and websites saying we would receive the update. This is the second Motorola product I have owned, and it will be the last. This is beyond infuriating. Motorola is going to go down hill, quick!

That’s terrible indeed. I see no logic behind this decision from Motorola. Although i am not much worried coz I have got my phone rooted and running on a custom ICS ROM with no issues. I guess you should take the custom ROM route as well.

It seems as if motorola’s getting rid of the phones you can individualize like extended batteries and other extensions making it more difficult to keep your present phone in the running like they did with the droid max instead of creating an updated phone you could add an extended battery for the Razor they came out withe one that had a massive battery but still using usb 2 or less add ons and less music file compatibility yet on the droid 4 no battery upwards abilty but blue tooth and usb 4 capabilties and a wider support for music but limited the screen size to view vs the Razor Maxx bigger sreen massive battery usb 2 and less music supported forcing us to specialize and have to buy a model for each taste instead of having a phone that is most current in all specific technologies with upgradable add ins to have an upscalable all in one model with bigger screen keyboard and all newest standards so you can enjoy your phone for video, music, pictures power and usable as a mobile extension of your home or work system and not have to cary 5 phone’s with you to enjoy all the mobile extensions photo, music, moovies in 1080 on the screen external keyboards etc its like they are going backwards like early PCs Amiga, Atari ST, early mac 286 PCs to pick one for each specialties! Equaling more idividual units to sale each one ging you one good thing and half ass everything else and just realeasing 6 months later multiple updated standards and having to purchase new phones to keep up. I’ve had the origanal droid the 2 global and regular 2 the 3 and now insted of biting on the. Droid 4 my other 2 phones in my family are the Thunderbolt, and Rezound both hauling ass and both excellent multicapable and upward adaptability and extendable to keep them in the running for at least a year! Motorola can build what we want all in one but that means were more happily content with that offering but upgradeable and extendable equalls longer ownership and content for an extended period of ownership and far less units and sales. Alot like cars of the 70s 1year warranty and early parts failure untill we started buying the more reliable compition through the tears and now the average ownership time is around 10 years and warranties from 3 to 10 years are the standard! Shame on you Motorola greedy, greedy greedy, as this the last message I will leave using my Droid 3 no ICS means I have to purchase a newer phone to get the newer opp system but it sure doesn’t mean I have to buy a Motorola to get it! As a retired USAF vetern I Definitely recognize being bent over when I see it! And you don’t even have the decency to offer lubrication! Your company is still mad about windows on the PC it killed your 6800 chip and risk chips so you have had to live on meager MAC PURCHASES since then while Intel and AMD soared ed through years while you lived of leftovers and your chip used to be on the Mac, Amiga and Atari ST then your greed lost out to the PC’s upgradeable abitlities and at the time the Amiga had 4096 colors and intel 16 funny how history repeats itself what did your past greed leave you!

I’ve had the phone for only a short time, the person that sold it too me assured me that this was something that Motorola would do since its one of the ‘Best’ droid phones on the market. blah blah blah… and Guess What? No Google Chrome for us X2 owners.

Just my luck! Motorola, you have disappointed my just as my last phone manufacture (HTC) did. I vowed NEVER to own another HTC product (which I must say I’m proud of myself for doing) and I can add Motorola to that list. This is down right ridiculous. My next phone will be the Galaxy S3 and I will make damn sure I do not recommend a Droid X2 or any other Motorola product.

I was told by a Verizon representative before I bought the Droid 3 that it WOULD be receiving an ICS update eventually. Now to hear this is extreeeeemelt disappointing. And to make matters worse, it definitely isn’t the first time I’ve been misinformed from an actual Verizon employee. I’m going to try and call them and see if they’ll do a warranty kind of replacement for a refurbished phone that has ICS like the Nexus. Verizon is soooo expensive, and the service I’ve received from them lately has left me wondering wth I pay so much for every month -_-

VZW reps have lied (misinformed) to me more than once. Since VZW began offering 4g, I do not see why they continue bragging about their network. I agree with everyone complaining about cell provider bloatware too. Just removing VZW junk from my phone would probably speed up my phone.Whoever heard of technology that is is less than one year old not receiving an update? Chrome with ICS justifies an update. This is a third world, customer unfriendly decision by Motorola and VZW.

They didnt do it did they? They probably told you they would give you a Razor…or you could upgrade. Who like the Razor???

Wow…they just want you to go buy a new phone! Scam! I’ve had DroidX, 2, and now 3. My son has 4…and I hate it. Can’t remove or change battery. I have an extra battery that I use daily. Can not charge in time. So Droid 4 is a failure in my eyes. Well, Droid may have lost another customer. I have friends trying to get me into iphone….lol. and it is my upgrade time!

I don’t know about all that but my D3 started asking for an update. around the 1st of August 2012. I finally gave in and said ok. Poof! D3 goes off and won’t come back on. Verizon cant get it to come back on. It is dead. Verizon makes me upgrade or get a Razor. I dont want a frikin Razor, it’s got no key board! Not even close to the same thing. So from my point of view these crooks send a kill code to my phone so I would have to buy a new phone and renew a contract. Thats low and dirty. Verizon, Motorola, Google can all go to hell. So can DELL, but thats another story.

They offered you a RAZR how is that forcing you to buy an upgrade. I was a droid 3 owner too didnt think I’d like not having a keyboard but i love my bionic. Plus RAZR got ICS.

I dont know why all you ppl keep giving Verizon all your money. They are way too expensive and they dont give a rip if you have a problem.

There are lots of other options out there. I can hook you up with unlimited everything with 4gigs of 4g for $49/mo. btw, hate bloatware? just root your phone and download a file manager, and you can delete all that factory stuff. Well worth it.
