iPhone 5 Touchscreen Bug Discovered by Game Developer

Game developers CMA Megacorp recently found a touchscreen issue with the iPhone 5 that could be a problem for some games according to Recombu.

The touchscreen bug makes the screen of the iPhone 5 drop out when quickly scrolling diagonally. Quickly swiping back and forth from the top left of the screen to the bottom right will cause the screen to stop for a few seconds or just become entirely unresponsive.

The issue is easily replicated on an iPhone 5 running either iOS 6.0 or iOS 6.0.1. As the video below shows the issue isn’t present on the iPhone 4S.

Recombu speculates the issue is a problem with the hardware of the iPhone 5 and not the software of the phone. If it is a hardware issue the problem will be difficult for Apple to fix, if it fixes it at all.

Our own testing of the bug produced the same results when swiping from top left to bottom right on the iPhone 5. We couldn’t produce the bug when swiping from the top right to the bottom left, however. It seems the bug only happens in the one specific direction.

This bug could be a problem for game developers who rely on rapid diagonal swipes in their games. Games like Infinity Blade will find this issue more problematic than others. Some users might not notice the issue, or attribute it to a fault of the game, but it’s something developers might have to keep in mind when creating new games.

The touchscreen bug likely isn’t a deal breaker for many users as not every users plays a lot of games on their iPhone. Issues like Apple Maps, the purple flare in photos, and how easy it is to scuff or scratch the aluminum on the iPhone 5 are much more obvious to most users. Those issues are ones that will make some people reconsider buying an iPhone 5, this one will mostly just affect gamers.

Yes! I own the iPhone 5 32GB in black and I run into the same problem. Also, when tweeting directly from iOS (not the app) the keyboard tends to get some sort of static lines across it when I toggle. Often times, it disappears completely.
