Windows Phone 7.8 Update Release Date Could Come Soon

Published

on

It appears that the highly anticipated roll out of the Windows Phone 7.8 update could be taking place soon, possibly as soon as this Wednesday according to a new rumor.

WMPowerUser is reporting that the Windows Phone 7.8 update could roll out as soon as this Wednesday. The site cites sources that are close to the situation who claim that the roll out will arrive this week after months of anticipation and a little under a month after Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system arrived.

If it doesn’t come Wednesday, and that is certainly possible as Microsoft has not yet announced anything, it may come soon after. Microsoft has confirmed to TechCrunch that it hopes to share details about the unreleased update in the near future. The company did not provide any specific timing but given the rumor, it could be that Microsoft announces something this month.

The Nokia Lumia 900 will be getting Windows Phone 7.8 instead of Windows Phone 8.

It also helps that Microsoft has started to sell a device with the Windows Phone 7.8 update on board in the Philippines. The Nokia Lumia 510 in the Philippines evidently comes equipped with the software on board. Previously, we had heard that Microsoft would start rolling out Windows Phone 7.8 after it released new devices running the new software and it could be that the release of the Lumia 510 is the sign current Windows Phone 7 users have been waiting for.

The Windows Phone 7.8 update is a stripped down version of Windows Phone 8 which Microsoft has promised for older Windows Phone devices in place of the more extensive Windows Phone 8 update. Windows Phone 8 will unfortunately not be rolling out to any older Windows Phones. Instead, it will be arriving Microsoft’s new batch of smartphones including the Lumia 920 and Windows Phone 8X.

The update, which can be seen in the video below, brings the new Start screen and a number of smaller changes including new coloring, more wallpapers, and more. Microsoft has yet to officially show off the software so as of yet, we do not know the entire contents of the update.

Hopefully, we will soon.
