Samsung Galaxy S3 Beats iPhone 5 as Best Smartphone of MWC 2013
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is better than the iPhone 5 according to a panel of judges at Mobile World Congress who picked the Galaxy S3 as the Best Smartphone of the show and tapped Samsung as the Device Manufacturer of the Year.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 are two of the biggest competing smartphones, and are at the front of consumer’s minds while shopping in 2012 and in 2013.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 also beat out devices like the Nokia Lumia 920, Galaxy Note 2 and several others to take the top spot.
This isn’t the first time Samsung has taken home an award over Apple. The MWC judges picked the Galaxy S2 over the iPhone 4S last year.
While neither of these phones launched at Mobile World Congress, the trade show judges phones that launch throughout the year, to pick the best of the best, rather than the best at a specific event.
According to Sascha Segan, one of the judges, the Best Smartphone is innovative, had a significant impact on the market and be globally important.
While Apple beat Samsung in market share during Q4 2013, Samsung delivered an impressive device with the Galaxy S3, which innovated with new motion sensing and nature inspired features like the ability to keep the screen on while a user is looking at it. The Galaxy S3 launched globally before coming to the U.S. and popularity in other countries may have played a part in the win.
By comparison, the iPhone 5 launched to claims that the iPhone was boring, not as innovative as Android and not the best iPhone ever. None of these complaints stopped blockbuster sales which helped Apple sell nearly double the number of iPhone 5′s in Q4 as Samsung.
The news comes as Samsung prepares to launch the Samsung Galaxy S4 in March and aims for a Galaxy S4 release as soon as April. Apple is rumored to be working on the iPhone 5S, which should to take on the Galaxy S4 later in 2013.
