iPhone 6 Interest Overshadows iPhone 5S

Published

on

According to the search trends, consumer interest in the iPhone 6 overshadows the iPhone 5S, even though this is likely the iPhone that will arrive on store shelves later this year.

Apple is known for following an iPhone naming system that adds an S to the end of the name for the model after a major re-design. The iPhone 5S is expected this summer with iPhone 5 looks and a few new features, but consumers are clearly focused on the iPhone 6.

Consumers are nearly twice as interested in the iPhone 6 as in the iPhone 5S, and for the last year the iPhone 6 also claims dramatically more interest.

With Google Trends we can compare search data for multiple search terms for a last year, and the iPhone 6 is clearly of more interest to consumers, even if it is in name only.

iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5S – Interest

The chart below shows the iPhone 6 searches peaking the week after Apple launched the iPhone 5. This was about the same time we heard the first iPhone 5S rumor. Despite a steady stream of iPhone 5S rumors, interest in the iPhone 6 grew dramatically faster than that in the iPhone 5S during the last year.

While Apple’s naming system could always change by the time the next iPhone arrives, many believe it will carry the iPhone 5S name, and that consumers will need to wait until 2014 for the iPhone 6.

Google Trends looks at the number of searches for a term over time, offering a 0-100 scale of interest in a search term over time. This gives us insight into what consumers are searching for most, in this case it’s the iPhone 6.

Why Is the iPhone 6 More Popular?

There are a number of reasons the iPhone 6 is more popular than that iPhone 5S, but perhaps the most obvious is that even with two generations of S models, many iPhone users think the iPhone that comes after the iPhone 5 will be the iPhone 6.

This is one of the reasons a former Apple ad man publicly called for Apple to skip the iPhone 5S and deliver the iPhone 6 this year. In addition to consumer expectations of naming and model numbers there is another big reason consumers may not care as much about the iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are almost identical.

Apple uses the iPhone ‘S’ models to deliver incremental upgrades with the same exterior design. The iPhone 3GS brought speed improvements in the same overall package. The iPhone 4S was a slightly faster iPhone with a better camera and Siri.

For the past four iPhone models Apple trained users that every other iPhone is worth getting really excited about — and that’s what the search data shows.

Based on the iPhone 6 rumors so far, consumers may be in for major changes. Apple reportedly is working on an iPhone 6 prototype with a larger 4.8-inch display. Apple is also looking for an expert in flexible displays, which could play a role in an iPhone 6 with a radically new design or a display that won’t crack easily when dropped. At this point it’s still too early to tell if this job posting is linked to the iPhone 6 or just mobile devices in general.

It’s not clear if Apple will increase the resolution of the iPhone 6 display, but there are hints of a Retina + display in iPhone 6 prototypes and the competition is quickly making 1080P HD smartphone displays a standard feature for flagship devices.

Rumors originally pointed to a fingerprint reader inside the iPhone 5S home button, but a recent job posting and one analyst point to this arriving as an iPhone 6 feature. Supply chain rumblings also indicate we may see wireless charging, a feature that is coming to more phones recently.

They’ve. Done everything on a phone they can do, except a solar charge to keep the battery up.

What of waste of time, money and advertising making the “s” iphones with very little upgrades to make iphone lovers/buyers think they are getting the latest technology.

Who will want to buy the 5S when at the same time Apple advertises the 6?

    Just plain stupid strategy!

Is like if Samsung was advertising the S4 and at the same time the S5, makes no sense and obviously buyers will wait for the S5, plain and simple logic.

Now is very clear that Apple is struggling and desperate copying everything from other android phones like bigger screen, 1080 resolution, plastic screen instead of braking glass, plastic removable back cover? removable battery?, memory slot? some software upgrades, etc…

Apple lost the battle on 2012 and 2013 with Samsung and if they don’t do drastic upgrades to their old iphone technology they will keep losing their sheep to better phone companies.

Iphone sheep can’t be loyal to Apple forever buying old and outdated technology.

Jack, just to set the record straight, Apple is not advertising the 5S, nor the 6. I think you’re imagining things…

Seeing as Apple basically designed almost every innovation in the Samsung S3, I find the argument difficult.

All Samsung have done is taking the Iphone concept, and made a cheaper version of it

      Apps – Iphone
      Video technology – Iphone
      Calling/answering – Iphone
      App store – Iphone
      MP3 music store – Iphone
      Speakers – Iphone
      Cloud technology – Iphone
      Voice recognition

I like Samsung mobiles. I have an S3. But they’re not innovators. They take tried and tested designs, and innovations, and produce them more cheaply

One of the biggest thing iphone sheep criticized about the Samsung S3 was the huge screen saying was too big to hold with one hand, blah, blah, blah… and now look at the iphone 6 making exactly the same size screens to compete with other android phones.

Jack, again, where did you get this information about the iPhone 6 screen size? More fantasy?!

Ever think that comsumers are uncertain of the name of the new product (5s or 6) and when searching for information on the next iphone they either search 6 or 5s , but essentially the search interest is in the same product (being the next iPhone).

    You schmuck

iPhone better have at least an 5.7″ screen or they are dead to me.

If you want a phablet then get a phablet. I don’t see apple making one anytime soon. You’ll be lucky if you get a 5 inch display, but a 5.7 inch? That’s just nonsense.

The new iphone better have something radical. Lord knows Samsung with it’s awkward, comically sized billboard phones has hit an intellectual wall (see: Mega). New iphone, otherwise, yawn.

Iphone 6 looks like a smaller, thinner, more powerful Iphone5.

Nothing to get excited about. Or hang on for

The important argument with smartphones is, Apple are the innovators.

They came up with the entire, modern concept of a smart phone. And continue to do so.
The entire way you use an S3 is ripped from Apple – from swiping to change a screen, to pinching to shrink it. From apps, to app stores, to mp3 downloads. From cloud technology, to voice recognition.

Apple generally does well as it makes the important breakthroughs.

Samsung does well as in partnership with Google it can produce the same product, and add to it a bit.

I own both S3 and Apple 5. S3 is the better phone, generally, but Apple 5 has the real, clever, innovations.

You know, always remember the innovators. Apple will always be debuting the new features, and Samsung will always be incorporating them later on.

    FANSUNG!
Apple han’t advertised the “5s” nor has it advertised the “6”.
In regard to your uneducated comment about Apple apparently copying everything from Samsung phones let me explain something……when Apple launched the original iPhone Samsung were still making phones with physical keypads, they didn’t make a proper smartphone until Apple released the iPhone. Apple invented the big screen phone, and no iPhone comes with a plastic screen. Nor does it come with a removable cover as that’s like having some old skool Nokia phone, it’c cheap. As for software upgrades, do you actually know anything about Android? it is dependent on the phone, the country and the carrier/network……iOS runs on ALL iDevices in ALL countries on ALL carriers/networks.
“Apple lost the battle on 2012 and 2013 with Samsung” how was that then? Because they sell more phones? Thats probably because they release phones wily nilly……lets be honest, the amount of phones Samsung have on the market is a bit silly.
I get that you own a Samsung and because you don’t own an iPhone your phone must be so much better but if I were you I’d find out a bit more before making comments and trying to give the impression you know what your taking about.

Im not buying the 5 or the 5s. If apple doesn’t make a major upgrade in the next iPhone (ex a larger display) ill problem just go with a Samsung note.

I love apple products, but they are lagging behind. There’s no reason it took this long for a 4 inch display, and yet the 4 inches is STiLL too small…

Step up the game apple. You’re going to lose this fanboy.

    Sent from my iPad.

Apple hasn’t lost the battle to anyone. They’re the standard by which all other cell phones are judged. Android is Windows all over again. An all-over-the-place os, being duh-stributed by so many different companies that app developers can barely keep up. Its destined for eventual failure, like Windows. If you want a cool toy, get a Droid. If you prefer elegant design and functionality, get an iPhone. You know that cell phone produced by the number 1 company in the world? Something Samsung never has been and never will be.
