LG is beginning to send media invitations to a new smartphone launch at the end of the month. Though the invitation doesn’t specify which phone LG is aiming to launch, there are speculations that the press event will be for the much rumored LG Optimus G2, which was recently leaked in photos. The media invite shows a profile of the slim smartphone, along with the tagline “ImaGination Begins,” suggesting that this will be the “G” series for LG given that the letter is capitalized in the text.
The event is scheduled for May 30th in Macau. The invitation was posted on Tech Radar.
Given that there is a splash of color emanating from the display, LG will probably be showcasing some screen technology for vibrant and vivid colors on this new smartphone model. LG has used IPS LCD screen technology, similar to what HTC has used, on past high-end phone models.
From the picture, we can also see a slight camera hump on the top rear of the phone.
The Optimus G2 will likely go head-to-head with rival Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and HTC’s flagship One smartphone.
If LG does launch the Optimus G2, it’s unclear what the manufacturer’s plans are for the phone for the U.S. market. The original Optimus G was available in the U.S. under AT&T Mobility and Sprint Nextel. A rumored Optimus G2 for Sprint was speculated to come with a Snapdragon 800 processor.
Most recently, LG had launched the Optimus G Pro in the U.S. with wireless carrier AT&T. With the original Optimus G, LG had been slow about a global rollout of that phone, which debuted first in Asia, then came to the U.S., and then made its way to Europe. Hopefully, LG can increase its rollout speed to more effectively compete against a more aggressive Samsung.
