iPad mini Keyboard Cases with Backlit Keys Arrive From Zagg

A new pair of iPad mini keyboards are on the way with backlit keys for iPad mini users who need to squeeze more productivity out of the smaller iPad.

ZAGG offers two backlit iPad mini keyboard cases for users to choose from and with multiple backlit key options and two distinct designs.

The ZAGGKeys Cover and ZAGGkeys Folio will retail for $99.99 each and will come in several colors at launch, with more color options coming in the months after.

The biggest selling point of these new iPad mini keyboard cases is that they come with backlit keys. The ZAGGkeys iPad mini keyboards let users pick from seven color options and three brightness levels. This is similar to the full size backlit iPad keyboard case we reviewed. These are the first backlit iPad mini keyboard cases we’ve come across.

In addition to the backlit keys, the both iPad mini cases feature a new hinge that lets users find the right angle for viewing while typing. ZAGG claims the hinge supports viewing angles up to 135 degrees. Most iPad mini keyboard cases only allow users to place the iPad mini in one angle, which limits the ease of use.

The ZAGGkeys Cover is 6.3mm thick and features a hinge that lets users flip the iPad mini around into a reading mode or to use the case as a stand for watching videos and playing games. A magnetic closure keeps the iPad mini and the ZAGGkeys Cover closed while in a bag or while in transit. The built-in battery should last three months on a charge according to ZAGG.

ZAGG offers the ZAGGKeys Cover in black and silver, to match the back color of both iPad mini models.

The ZAGGkeys Folio is, as the name implies, a folio style case, but it isn’t much thicker than the Cover keyboard case, measuring 6.9mm thick. This iPad mini keyboard case features the same 135 degree hinge, but does not allow users to swivel it around for play or viewing modes. The Cover case also wraps the iPad up, protecting it from scratches and small drops. Like the other case, the battery should last about three months.

The ZAGGkeys Folio iPad mini keyboard case will arrive in white and black, with new colors coming in the fall.

iPad mini keyboard cases must make sacrifices on key size, but it looks like slight improvement over the ZAGGKeys Mini 7 iPad mini keyboard. Users will no longer need to use the function key to use common punctuation like the “?” which is a nice change.

Zagg continues to impress me with their forward-thinking technology. When the iPad mini was first created, I doubt that Apple would have ever imagined the mini as a 7.9-inch tablet/ultrabook. With Zagg, anything is possible.
Also, great article! Do you know when they plan on advertising for pre-orders?
