It’s being reported that Microsoft currently has prototypes of Google Glass-like wearable devices and is testing them as we speak, according to the Wall Street Journal who spoke with several anonymous sources. Microsoft supposedly describes it as “internet-connected eyewear” that mimics Google Glass.
Unfortunately, there are very few details, aside from the company simply testing these devices, but it does show that Microsoft is at least interested in wearable technology, and it might get in on the wearable device craze. Google Glass has gotten a lot of attention lately, and it seems Microsoft doesn’t want Google to be the only one making such wearable technology.
As far as how these Google Glass clones from Microsoft would work, there’s absolutely no information regarding that, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they were pretty similar to Google Glass, while still including unique Windows features, like smart tiles.
Microsoft has been rumored in the past to be making what has been called Kinect Glasses, which allow gamers to experience an augmented reality, with the glasses connecting to a WiFi network. We’re not sure if this has anything to do with these most-recent reports of smartglass testing, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there was a connection.
Of course, we’re taking this with a big grain of salt, as prototypes are passed through all the time, most of which never see the light of day. It’s possible that Microsoft is just curious about what Microsoft glasses would be like, and might not be interested in actually producing them for the mass market. However, it’s always possible that Microsoft may actually be brewing something to compete with Google Glass in order to win over more users.
But don’t get your hopes up just yet; it might be a couple of years before we see Microsoft’s version of Google Glass, if it even does come to the market. Wearables are becoming the future, though. At least that’s what companies and analysts think. Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Gear smartwatch and Google’s Glass is quickly making its way to the market with a rumored release sometime next year. It’s still a bit early to tell if the wearables market will take off, but it seems that companies have faith in it so far.
