Samsung to Shrink Galaxy S4 Active to ‘Mini’ Size?

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 family is getting a little crowded with devices ranging from the flagship Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S4 Mini, the Galaxy S4 Zoom, and the Galaxy S4 Active. A recent FCC filing suggests that Samsung may add yet another member to the Galaxy S4 family in the form of a Galaxy S4 Active Mini, a smaller variant of the waterproof Galaxy S4 Active on the market today.

Unlike the Galaxy S4 Active, which came with comparable specs to the Galaxy S4 flagship at the high-end of Samsung’s lineup, the miniature Active version is more of a mid-range device that’s intended to more closely resemble the Galaxy S4 Mini. The device is powered by a dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at a1.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, and a 5-megapixel rear camera. The display, however, leaves a lot to be desired and is the lowest screen resolution in Samsung’s Galaxy S4 family to date. The Galaxy S4 Active Mini is said to have a 4.65-inch display with a WVGA resolution of 480 X 800 pixels. The resolution is lower than the qHD resolution on the Galaxy S4 Mini and the full HD display on the Galaxy S4.

Aside from these basic specs, the model number for this phone is revealed as the GT-I8580 according to Phone Arena

Though the device is passing through the FCC for U.S. regulatory approval, it’s still unclear if the device will become available in the U.S. and under which carriers. So far, in the U.S., the Galaxy S4 is available on all major carriers in the States while the Galaxy S4 Active remains an AT&T exclusive. It’s also unclear when Samsung will announce this phone.

If the mini version of the Active is anything like its bigger counterpart, it should be able to handle splashes and dirt with ease. The Active is able to handle submersion in water for up to 1 meter deep for up to thirty minutes at a time.
