iPhone 6 Display Sizes, Resolutions Rumored in New Report

The iPhone 6 launch will usher in the era of a large screen iPhone with two sizes according to a source which predicted the Retina Display for the iPad ahead of Apple’s official announcement.

For months iPhone 6 rumors and analyst chatter revolved around an iPhone 6 with a larger screen, but the details that arrived in a new report this week paint a clearer picture of what to expect from the iPhone 6.

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 feature a 4-inch display which is small compared to the Galaxy S4, Moto X and HTC One, but according to NPD DisplaySearch analyst David Hsieh Apple is preparing two iPhone screen sizes which will allow the company to better compete with these devices and with larger screened devices like the Galaxy Note 3 and HTC One Max.

Rumors suggest Apple will offer an iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display, the same size display as we see on the Moto X to the right of an iPhone 5s in this image.

The iPhone 6 screen size is still a moving target as this new report is an update from Hsieh’s October 2013 report. In the new report on iPhone 6 screen sizes Hsieh reports a smaller screen size for a larger iPhone 6 and higher resolutions for both iPhone 6 models he believes we will see in 2014. His report aligns with a Wall Street Journal report from 2013 which claims Apple is experimenting with iPhone 6 display sizes from 4.8-inches to 6-inches.

According to the updated report, which also addresses a large screen iPad Pro and a iWatch, DisplaySearch predicts Apple will offer the iPhone 6 with two screen sizes and resolutions.

  • 5.5-inch display with 1920×1080 resolution, 401 ppi

Apple is not sharing iPhone 6 display sizes with anyone at this time, but insider’s like Hsieh are in communication with sources at major panel makers to determine the strategies and sizes in play at these companies, which will ultimately influence the screen sizes on the iPhone 6 and other mobile devices. NPD DisplaySearch and David Hsieh predicted the iPad 3’s Retina display 4-5 months ahead of the device launch, and this new report could be a similar look into the future of the iPhone 6.

Hsieh calls out the importance of the display in setting the iPhone 6 apart in the market which Apple used to dominate, writing, “the display is the most important user interface for devices, which utilize it to provide differentiation and enable innovative features.”

While Apple is still a well loved brand with a loyal following in the past several months conversations with consumers suggest that Apple needs to deliver an innovative product with the iPhone 6 release or with an iWatch to avoid losing consumers to Samsung and others.

While at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Mich. we spoke to an automotive product specialist who was fascinated with the Google Glass we were wearing and wanted to know more about the Nexus 5. During a 10 minute conversation about wearables and smartphones she complained that, “Apple hasn’t really innovated in a while,” lamenting the lack of a iWatch or a iPhone that offers more than the iPhone 5s. A larger display is not necessarily innovative on its own, but it could allow Apple to innovate on a software front with features that could wow consumers.

The iPhone 6 release date speculation puts the date anywhere in 2014, but the best bet is to focus on a late summer or fall iPhone 6 release time frame which would allow Apple to produce the Touch ID sensor for the iPhone 6 and fit in with an iOS 8 announcement at WWDC 2014 in June.
