iPhone 5c Reportedly Launching in 8GB Flavor to Combat Poor Sales

Apple discontinued its 8GB iPhone with the introduction of the iPhone 5, making the iPhone 4s the last iPhone to come with an 8GB option. However, the company is reportedly planning to launch an 8GB iPhone 5c as early as this week to combat poor sales of the plastic-laden smartphone.

The report comes from an alleged internal email from German wireless carrier O2, which claims that it will begin selling the 8GB version of the iPhone 5c for €509 ($707). This is €60 less than what the 16GB iPhone 5c is selling for on the carrier.

UPDATE: Engadget has received a photo of what is said to be the packaging label for the 8GB iPhone 5c.

As for the price of what such a phone would cost over in the US, we’re guessing Apple would sell an 8GB iPhone 5c for $450 off-contract and free after signing a contract, considering that the company usually tacks on $100 for each storage capacity tier.

As for what will happen to the 8GB iPhone 4s, that’s still up in the air. Apple only sells the 8GB version of the iPhone 4s, so it could be that the new iPhone 5c would replace the iPhone 4s as Apple’s entry-level smartphone.

While many people may think that the iPhone 5c is inferior to the iPhone 4s because of the cheaper design and build quality, looks can be deceiving. The iPhone 5c actually has better internals that pretty much match the iPhone 5’s performance — not to mention the better camera in the iPhone 5c as well.

It certainly makes sense that Apple would want to phase out the iPhone 4s as quickly as possible, considering that it uses the older 30-pin connector and also sports the older and smaller 3.5-inch display rather than the newer 4-inch display on the iPhone 5c.

However, we’d take this rumor with a grain of salt, as companies rarely try and revive a poorly-selling product by adding a new twist to it. Usually we simply see a new and improved product under a different name, but if Apple does indeed plan to introduce an even cheaper iPhone 5c, it may see slightly-better sales than when it first launched back in September.
