HTC One (M8) Dot View Case Hands-On (Video)

When HTC introduced its brand new HTC One (M8) smartphone last month, a brand new and rather unique accessory made its debut at the same time. It’s called the Dot View Case or Cover, and it allow you to protect your phone without fully losing all the functionality.

Essentially the Dot View case protects both the front and back of your new HTC One (M8) yet still lets the user see alerts like the time, date and weather, and even notifications for incoming messages and calls. That isn’t all either, you can interact with it and answer calls all without ever touching the display. The Dot View case allows for the same motion gesture controls with the swipe of your finger without ever opening the case.

We’ve never been the biggest fans of flip cases, from any manufacturer. Simply because they’re as much of a hassle as they are an accessory. Not to mention get in the way while you’re trying to take a picture, or hold the flap open while replying to a text message. With that said, the Dot View may have a few features that make it worthwhile, even with those downsides.

The entire hard plastic case clips on the back of your device, but it’s the front that does the special stuff. Using a unique dot-matrix style cut-out design, you’re able to still see alerts from the phone. The thin layer allows for protection, but it isn’t too thick and you can double-tap to turn on the display, swipe to answer calls, and more all with the case and flap covering the screen. You can make calls without removing the case, or even turning on your phone. Check out the video below for more details and a quick glance at what to expect.

The phone does all the work by displaying the information in a bold font with the rest of the display black to preserve battery, and the Dot View case lets enough light through for a casual viewing experience. It’s even bright enough that it still works outdoors in a bright environment. This may be the first flip case we actually use more than once.

The new Dot View cover will come in multiple different colors, we have gray to match our brushed aluminum HTC One (M8), and it will run you $49.99 to get one yourself. That’s a bit steep for a case, but offering protection and additional features at the same time could make this a viable option for smartphone owners.

It’s an extremely well made case, and so far the flap is handling the abuse pretty well, but we’ll report back and see how it does over time. In the end we’ll probably still let the HTC One (M8) go without a case, since it’s such a good looking phone, or opt for a standard TPU case elsewhere. The features and additional options are nice with the Dot View, but the high price and annoying flap still may bother some.

If you love flip cases, the HTC One (M8) Dot View case is one worth checking out.

The dot case seems good and I will definitely look to purchase it along with HTC M8. I already have HTC Droid DNA for which I even purchased a qi charger to keep it fully charged. Well is there any dotted flip case for my DNA so that I can protect it too without compromising on hiding its looks?
