Apple is planning a new MacBook Air release date for next week according to a new rumor. This report lines up with rumors of a MacBook Air 2014 update coming soon, but is a month earlier than expected.

The MacBook Air models sold today are nearly a year old, but sill offer long battery life and a speedy processor options. Apple announced these models in June 2013 at WWDC. Apple did not change the design of the MacBook Air last year with this update. The company did drop the price of the MacBook Air by $100 by reducing the amount of RAM in the entry-level model.

We could see a new MacBook Air release date as soon as next week according to a new rumor.

Rumors point to a new MacBook Air release date in the middle of 2014 for a refreshed MacBook Air. We’ve also heard rumors of a new MacBook Air Retina with a new slimmer design, high-resolution display and a 12-inch screen, but the latest rumor does not focus on that model.

Assuming this rumor is true we could see the MacBook Air mid-2014 refresh arrive quietly on Apple store shelves overnight. The latest new MacBook Air rumor arrives from MacGeneration. The publication cites an un-named source behind the leak which claims we will see a new MacBook Air 11-inch and 13-inch next week. The report suggests Apple will announce the Macbook Air 2014 refresh on Tuesday.

The report suggests Apple is planning to deliver a speed bump with new Intel processors. A separate rumor points to new RAM in the MacBook Air that can deliver faster performance and some power efficiency gains that could help deliver better battery life. It is not clear what Intel processors Apple will choose for a MacBook Air mid-2014 update.

This is not the first rumor from MacGeneration. The publication predicted that Apple planned to announce the iPad Air, iPad mini Retina and new MacBook Pro last October. Apple did announce the devices, but a week later than the publication predicted. That is not spot on, but fairly accurate for an Apple rumor involving multiple products.

Amazon is out of stock of the 13-inch MacBook Air until next week.

Amazon is out of stock of the 13-inch MacBook Air until next week.

The MacBook Air currently ships in 24 hours from the Apple Store and is available for pickup today in many local Apple Stores. Amazon’s supplies are tighter for the 13-inch MacBook Air. The base model will not be in stock until May 1st and the 256GB model is only available from a third-party, with an out of stock sign from Amazon. BestBuy shows online stock of the MacBook Air as good, but many stores in Ohio require the 13-inch base model shipped to the store in “3-5 days” rather than available now.

Thinning supplies are often a hint at a new model, so this rumor may not be far off. It is also possible that supplies are simply tighter due to shoppers spending tax returns on a new computer. It is still interesting that popular retailers are out of stock at this time.

Several reports point to a new MacBook Air release date a month later than this report at Apple’s WWDC 2014 event on June 2nd.

WWDC 2014 is a more likely venue for an announcement, but Apple does occasionally push small updates live to the Apple Store with a press release and no event.

A report from WeiPhone claims the new Macbook Air release date is coming soon, though there was no specific date mentioned. It is possible that both of these reports are pointing to a new MacBook Air 2014 model ahead of WWDC 2014.

DigiTimes reports that supply chain sources expect a new MacBook Air in the second half of 2014. This rumor specifically addresses a MacBook Air Retina model with a higher resolution display. The report from MacGeneration is focused on a small update to the current models, so it is possible this report is for a different device.

An Apple 2014 roadmap from Ming-Chi Kuo outlines potential release windows for many Apple products including a new MacBook Air Retina with a new design, New MacBook Pro, cheaper iMac and new iPads — but no new iPod touch 6th generation or Mac Mini 2014 update.

This roadmap includes a MacBook Air Retina in late 2014, but does not include any new hardware during the WWDC 2014 event, or early next week. Apple may be waiting to offer a new product that is a perfect fit, or Kuo may not be concerned with a minor update to the current MacBook Air 11 and 13-inch models.

There are rumors of a brand new MacBook Air Retina with a new design for later this year.

Apple CEO Tim Cook explained why consumers must wait for new Apple products in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal. “You want to take the time to get it right. Our objective has never been to be first. It’s to be the best.” Said Cook, adding, “I feel great about what we’ve got coming. Really great and it’s closer than it’s ever been.”

It is unclear if a new MacBook Air release date will arrive next week, or if Apple will save the announcement for WWDC 2014 where we expect to see iOS 8 and OS X 10.10, but potential shoppers should educate themselves before buying a new MacBook Air today.
