GTA 5 for PS4 Leak Reveals Huge Release Date Problem

We’re still about a month away from the official launch of GTA 5 for the Xbox One and PS4, but already a leak is pointing to a huge potential problem for release date buyers. Xbox One and PS4 users may need to clear away more than a few of their older games before purchasing the digital version of GTA 5.

According to a screenshot posted to GTA Forums, users who purchase the digital versions of GTA 5 for PS4 can expect a download that’ll take up a whopping 50GB of space on their PS4’s hard drive. The image is of the official pre-order page for GTA 5 for PS4 in Europe. That’s before any extra content updates are added or new downloadable content is released for it.

In hindsight, we knew that GTA 5 for the newer consoles would be bigger than their last-generation counterparts. Rocksteady, the game’s developer, has spent the last year beefing up the original version of the game with better graphics and high-definition textures. All of this was going to require more space on a user’s hard drive.

Where the trouble comes in is for the users who picked up a PS4 last year or earlier this year. These users are more likely to have picked up a ton of other games that they’re working to complete or completely enjoy. With all the free games that PS4 users get with PlayStation Plus, it’s possible that 500GB of storage every console comes with is already full, or will be full by the time GTA 5 arrives on November 18th. Game saves will be fine, but users could find themselves deleting a ton of the games they’ve already downloaded just to get GTA 5 on their hard drive.

Xbox One users could find themselves facing the same problem too. Microsoft also gives out two free games to users a month that are completely digital and need to be installed on the console’s 500GB hard drive. Luckily, the Xbox One has a trick up its sleeve. Just like with the PS4, users can manage storage manually, but Microsoft has also added external hard drive support in recent months. Users can plug in a hard drive to their Xbox One and have it act as an extension to the storage pool that’s built into the console. That’s something Sony’s PS4 can’t do just yet.

Luckily both consoles store game saves in the cloud. Although users may find that installing some of their favorite games to play GTA 5 is a hassle, downloading those games once they’re done with GTA 5 and getting back into the action is easy.

Revealed this past summer GTA 5 for Xbox One and PS4 isn’t a successor to last year’s blockbuster open-world game. In virtually every way that counts, it’s the same game with the same story and multiplayer. The difference is that GTA 5 for Xbox One and PS4 buyers are getting a better-looking game and more than a few extras.

Hundreds of songs have been added to the new versions for users to listen to in-game. Everything from plants and trees to buildings looks more realistic. Better textures and drawing distances give players the sense that they’re in a living breathing game world and not just another sandbox with weather effects and a few extras. Users will notice big differences in Grand Theft Auto Online’s visual detail too. Grand Theft Auto Online is the free multiplayer experience that comes with the game at absolutely no additional charge.
