11 iOS 8.1.1 Release Predictions for iPhone & iPad

Published

on

With an iOS 8.1.1 release date for iPhone and iPad on the horizon thanks to the update’s presence in Apple’s beta program, we want to make some bold predictions ahead of Apple’s next big iOS 8 release date and help set the stage for iPhone and iPad users dealing with iOS problems on iOS 8.1 and below.

In late September, Apple released its iOS 8.1 update into the beta program. For several weeks Apple and its developers poked and prodded the update in an effort to ensure a smooth public release. In mid-October, Apple took the stage and confirmed an October 20th release for the iOS 8.1 upgrade for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Right on cue, Apple’s iOS 8.1 update rolled out to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users all over the globe. And while iOS 8.1 fixed some of the initial iOS 8 problems affecting iPhone and iPad users, the iOS 8.1 update failed to tackle all of the annoying problems that emerged in September’s iOS 8.0 update leaving many iPhone and iPad users looking for relief.

We’re still not sure when that relief will arrive (we’ve offered some potential fixes to help in the meantime) but it’s looking like Apple’s next iOS 8 upgrade and potential savior will be iOS 8.1.1.

iPhone 6 Review - 3

Earlier this month, surprised a lot of people when it released the iOS 8.1.1 update into its beta program. The move was interesting given that the company rarely releases small bug fixes into beta. What it looks like, at least from here, is that Apple is trying to avoid the mistakes it made with iOS 8.0.1 several weeks ago.

While the iOS 8.1.1 exists only as a beta update for developers, the beta and other sources have provided a great detail of information about the what’s next for owners of Apple’s iOS 8 powered iPhones and iPads. It has not, however, reveal every detail. That’s where we come in.

Today, ahead of the iOS 8.1.1 release date, we want to make some educated guesses about the release of Apple’s next iOS 8 update. These iOS 8.1.1 predictions should help set expectations for iPhone and iPad users in the United States dealing with assorted problems on iOS 8 and iOS 7. These predictions are based on years of dealing with Apple, its updates, and good ole fashioned gut instincts.

One More iOS 8.1.1 Beta, If That

The first iOS 8.1.1 beta came as a big surprise given that Apple never releases incremental bug fix updates into the beta program. It’s clear that the company does not want to repeat the mistakes it made with iOS 8.0.1 so the update’s entry into the beta program, while odd, is probably a good thing.

iPhone 6 Review - 6

Given how little time iOS 8.1, a much bigger update, spent in Apple’s beta program, we can’t imagine that the iOS 8.1.1 update taking much longer. If anything, we could see one more beta. That said, given that we haven’t heard about any major problems with the current version, we would not be surprised if Apple released the software after one beta release. At most, we could see Apple pushing out one more just to be safe.

iOS 8.1.1 Release Date Surprise

We have a feeling that Apple is going to push this update without any kind of official announcement. Apple’s iOS releases are pretty unpredictable in terms of the date, it has pushed out iOS updates on just about every day of the week, and that means that you’re probably going to have to check your iPhone or iPad, or the web, every day, to see if the company has released its latest bug fixer.

iPhone 6 Review - 2

Apple’s held two launch events in the past two months and we don’t see it hosting one in November or December. Look for the company to push this smaller bug fix update out without much fanfare.

iOS 8.1.1 Release Date in 2014

Rumors suggest that we could see the iOS 8.1.1 release date arrive this week though the source is far from reliable. What is reliable though are our own site analytics which show a massive uptick in iOS 8.1.1 activity out of San Francisco in recent days. This is a sign that Apple, and its testing partners, are currently testing iOS 8.1.1 out in the wild. The uptick is a sign that we could be getting closer to a public release date.

Analytics aside, iOS 8.1.1 is a small bug fixer. We know this because of the iOS 8.1.1 beta. We can’t see the beta taking months to complete and with iOS 8 complaints growing louder by the day, we can’t see Apple sitting on this update for much longer. Look for the company to roll out the update in 2014 ahead of the holidays. We would not be surprised if the iOS 8.1.1 release date arrived in November.

iOS 8.1.1 Release Time

Look for Apple to stick to the usual 10AM PST release time for the iOS 8.1.1 update. There’s nothing that suggests a change from this timing and we’re predicting an iOS 8.1.1 release time in and around the usual time.

Storage Issues Frustrate

We predict frustration amongst 16GB iPhone and iPad users who have filled up their storage space over the past two months. iOS updates require a certain amount of storage to install Over-the-Air (through Settings) and iPhone and iPad users that don’t have a lot of storage space typically run into issues. Apple suggests deleting files in order to install OTA though there is a simple fix to get around this annoying problem.

iPhone 6 Review - iPhone 6 Plus

To bypass this problem, install iOS 8.1.1 via iTunes. It’s as simple as that. Keep that in mind as we push towards the iOS 8.1.1 release date or you might find yourself amongst the crowd of iPhone and iPad users voicing frustration about Apple’s OTA roll out. We’ve relayed this solution at least a 100 times in the past and we always see people moaning and groaning.

Lots of Bug Fixes for iOS 8 Problems

iOS 8.1.1 isn’t looking like a cure-all iOS update but it’s more than likely going to have a nice list of fixes for iOS 8 problems. The current change log for the beta lists a number of fixes for iOS problems though we expect that list to grow once the iOS 8.1 update is released. Do not expect the iOS 8.1.1 update to deliver any surprise features. The update will almost certainly be aimed at iOS problems and iOS problems alone.

Lingering iOS 8 Problems

We predict that the iOS 8.1.1 update will fail to squash every single iOS 8 problem on the iPhone and iPad. It’s a pretty easy prediction to make given that iOS updates never solve every issue and given how many iOS 8 problems are plaguing iPhone and iPad users right now. We saw iOS 7 problems linger all the way thru Apple’s last iOS 7 update, iOS 7.1.2, and we’re willing to bet money that iOS 8.0 problems will endure.

iPhone 6 Review - 11

Those of you who are dealing with iOS 8 problems would be wise to take a look at our list of fixes for iOS 8.1 problems. They’ve helped settle the performance on several of our devices including the iPhone 6 and they will be helpful if iOS 8.1.1 fails to fix some of the smaller issues on board the iOS 8 update. Bookmark and come back to them after iOS 8.1.1’s arrival.

iOS 8.1.1 Problems

We also expect the iOS 8.1.1 update to deliver some iOS 8 problems of its own. Apple’s bug fix updates typically are meant for good though they too are known for wrecking havoc on iPhones and iPads. Battery life, Wi-Fi issues, Bluetooth issues, and installation issues are among the most common problems and we expect all four of those to pop up after iOS 8.1.1 arrives.

We fully expect there to be other issues too and those of you looking to install the iOS 8.1.1 update would be wise to prepare. Proper preparation typically helps to mitigate iOS issues.

Big Performance Boost for iPhone 4s, iPad 2

When Apple lists something on a change log, it typically means business. Bug fixes typically eradicate bugs, features typically work as advertised and performance enhancements typically enhance performance. iOS 8.1.1 says that it’s going to help the performance on the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 and we fully expect it to enhance the performance on both devices.

iphone-4s-cam

We doubt that the update will return them to the state they were in when they first arrived but if iOS 7.1 for the iPhone and iPad is any indication, there’s a good chance that they’ll start to feel somewhat new again. iOS 7.1 worked wonders for devices like the iPhone 5 and we’re confident this update is going to help bolster the performance on Apple’s aging former flagships.

Last iOS 8 Update in 2014

With the end of the year close and holidays on the horizon, we expect this update to be the last iOS 8 update of 2014. Engineers will likely be on holiday, testers too, and if everything goes according to plan, iOS 8.1.1 should help to stabilize the iOS 8 experience enough so that Apple doesn’t need to release another iOS 8 update for iPhone and iPad.

iOS 8.1.1 Jailbreak MIA

With news that the iOS 8.1.1 update patches up the iOS 8 Pangu jailbreak, we’re expecting iOS 8.1.1 users to be without a working jailbreak when iOS 8.1.1 arrives.

Unless the Pangu developers work some magic, we have a feeling that iOS 8.1.1 users are going to have to wait a bit for their chance to get a jailbreak on board. So, if you want to jailbreak, update to iOS 8.1 right now. Or, if you’re looking stay off of iOS 8, stick to your jailbreak on iOS 7 or below. At least for now.

Even though I’ve never seen it discussed as a problem or mentioned as a fix, I hope 8.1.1 fixes the video player. The thing stinks in iOS 8.

No buffer indicator. Scrubbing is sloppy and over sensitive. Video/sound freezes but clock still keeps ticking down. Freezes are common.

I’m not sure about iOS 8 but iOS 7 sure has came a long way from iOS 7.0 to 7.1.2… It was almost flawless for me at 7.1.2 but then iOS 8 screws it all up over again.

New ios 8.1 bug has presented itself to me several times over the last two days: I keep getting a pop up to enter my voice mail password. I don’t have a voice mail password.

Also, the “Dictation” pop up is getting annoying.
