Apple is already working on the iOS 8.2 update that will bring other fixes to the Apple devices, but this is not coming until 2015, and it includes a big focus on the Apple Watch.

While Apple still lets users downgrade from iOS 8.1.2 to iOS 8.1.1, there is no way to downgrade to iOS 7.1.2 or iOS 7 at this time, so you will need to stay with iOS 8.1.1 or iOS 8.1.2 until Apple releases another update. The iOS 8.1.1 downgrade will disappear soon.

iPad 2 iOS 8.1.2 Installation

We could not find any reports of iOS 8.1.2 installation problems on the iPad 2, which is something we looked for after several reports that users ran into problems on the iPhone 4s with this update. You should still make sure you are backed up before the update, but overall you should be safe.

“Confirmed. My iPad2 runs as smooth as IOS7 now!”

Another user jlianz writes,

“I recently had to completely wipe and reinstall my ipad 2 (64GB wifi) with 8.1 and that process made it as fast as it ever was. 8.1.2 is fine. No lags.”

It’s worth noting that not everyone is on board with this. User jonny says that it is, “still slower than 7.”

Upgrading from iOS 5 is a bigger decision.

If you are still on iOS 7, or even on earlier versions like iOS 5 and iOS 6, you need to consider this more. It looks like performance is finally at iOS 7 levels again, but there is no going back to the older operating system, so think before you update, and you may want to wait for the iOS 8.2 release.

Just installed 8.1.2 last night on old iPad 2. My iPad now is running so slow! The Internet pages are taking minutes to open if they complete at all. I’m waiting as long if not longer than dialup! FB app is also taking minutes to scroll down from page to page.

Thanks for the feed back on the newest update. My iPad 2 is still running on iOS 6.1 and I’m fairly content with it. The new Facebook app just keeps getting bulkier and bulkier with each update and does take a while to load. Google Chrome definitely takes a performance hit after having more than 6 tabs open. Newer apps in the app store are more dependent on newest devices and their processing power with larger RAM, so seeing a sluggish performance on this device with its outdated hardware is bound to happen.

I loved my iPad 2 BEFORE I unfortunately updated to iOS 8 then did the subsequent updates with 8.1.2 just a little while ago. Hate 8.0 and still HATE 8.1.2. My iPad continues to run slow, pages take forever to load, email opens slowly and have to wait forever for individual email to load. Very frustrating, used to love my iPad now I hate it.

Followed the whole update process. Took me 4 hours! Then after the automatic reboot, no 8.1.2 but still 7.1.1 on my ipad 2! What the @&€!)()!

lies, do not update to ios8.1.2 and remains on ios 7 and below, if you do not have a home paperweight. Clean installation looks good and everything works when you use a couple of days ipad, upload aplikacve, music, movies, just start when it normally uses, totally freezes and stops working. Processor and RAM goes full speed and the battery is discharged about 700 mA. Do not believe what is written here ..

Absolutely regretted upgrading to iOS 8, everything is running super slow and laggy, wifi speed is crap, battery life shortened. DO NOT UPGRADE (don’t think you can call this an upgrade because it doesn’t feels like one)

Thanks for the reviews on both the iphone4s and ipad2 ios8.2. I finally upgraded both to ios8.2, and performance impacts are mostly transparent. Most importantly, there isn’t any sluggishness or lag when flipping between apps or when using the keyboard. speed is however impacted when you update apps and try to use the device at the same time. Overall, both devices are still performing as I would expect for their age, and most of the little syncing features with OS X Yosemite are present.
