iPhone 4s iOS 8.1.2 Reviews
The iPhone 4s iOS 8.1.2 reviews are in and users are not 100% happy with Apple’s new software update for the iPhone 4s.
For the last three months iPhone 4s iOS 8 reviews shared a similar mix of excitement and disappointment, but when Apple delivered iOS 8.1 users enjoyed a small boost in iPhone 4s performance that remains for most owners that made the jump to iOS 8.1 worthwhile.
After three months, there are still many iPhone 4s users on iOS 7.1.2 trying to decide if it is worth upgrading to iOS 8.1.2.
Apple’s new iOS 8.1.2 update fixes missing ringtones and other problems, and it might finally be enough to persuade some users to upgrade from iOS 7 to iOS 8.1.2. Small updates like this focus on specific fixes, but there is a potential for problems, especially on older devices like the iPhone 4s.
Here is a closer look at iPhone 4s iOS 8.1.2 performance from users who live with the aging iPhone 4s on a daily basis.
iPhone 4s iOS 8.1.2 Review
We collected iPhone 4s iOS 8.1.2 reviews from users on Twitter and postings in the Apple Support Forums to help you decide if you should install iOS 8.1.2 on your iPhone 4s.
Apple is currently working on an iOS 8.2 update for 2015 that mainly focused on the upcoming Apple Watch, but it may also include some performance upgrades for the iPhone 4s as well.
If you upgrade to iOS 8.1.2 you will need to wait a while for another upgrade as it is very unlikely Apple will deliver an iOS 8.1.3 update in 2014.
iOS 8.1.2 Installation
For most users the iOS 8.1.2 installation on the iPhone 4s is a smooth process, but there are some reports on the Apple Support Forums of problems. One iOS 8.1.2 problem that multiple users report is the inability to make calls or send texts after updating to iOS 8.1.2 on the iPhone 4s.
This is the biggest reason you should back up your iPhone before every update, even a small one like this. If this happens to you, you’ll need to perform a Factory Reset to get things back to normal. You’ll need to restore from a backup as this will wipe your iPhone of all data.
iPhone 4s iOS 8.1.2 Performance & Speed
On Twitter we see some users who are happy with iOS 8.1.2 on the iPhone 4s, but the best comparison comes from kabriolett, with a side-by-side video of iOS 7.1.2 vs iOS 8.1.2 on the iPhone 4s.
For users who are trying to decide if it is worth upgrading from iOS 7 to iOS 8 this is an essential video to watch. Although iOS 8.1.2 is an improvement over iOS 8, the apps still launch faster to where users can start using them in iOS 7.1.2 on the iPhone 4s.
If you care more about speed than about new features, you may still want to stay on iOS 7. If you are already on iOS 8, some users are happy with the overall performance of this update on the iPhone 4s, like Farrukh below.

iPhone 4s iOS 8.1.2 Battery Life
The iPhone 4s battery life after installing iOS 8.1.2 is a pain point for many users on Twitter and Apple Support Forums. Keep in mind that users who don’t have problems are less likely to post on these places, but there are enough complaints that it is worth considering before you update.

On the Apple Support Forums one user complains that the update dramatically lowered battery life and that WiFi is broken.
iPhone 4s WiFi, Bluetooth & Cellular
There are multiple reports of grayed out WiFi on iOS 8.1.2 from iPhone 4s owners. Some users remain without working WiFi on iOS 8.1.2 and for others this is a new problem. Other users report that after updating the iPhone 4s to iOS 8.1.2 that WiFi is now grayed out. For some users resetting network settings fixes this. To try this go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. This removes WiFi networks, but not your data.
For the most part Bluetooth and Cellular connections do not appear to be a major issue for iPhone 4s owners on iOS 8.1.2.
iPhone 4s iOS 8.1.2 Problems
There are a number of iOS 8.1.2 problems, including those we outline in this post with fast battery life draining, grayed out WiFi, problems upgrading and then sending texts or making calls and other potential issues. If you back up, you can be ready for these potential problems. You can see a list of other potential iOS 8.1.2 problems that you should be aware of, and fixes.
Should You Install iOS 8.1.2 on the iPhone 4s?
For users who are already running iOS 8 or iOS 8.1 on the iPhone 4s, this looks like a solid update. There are some WiFi issues and potential problems with installing or with battery life, but these problems do not appear to be widespread.
For users still on iOS 7 or iOS 7.1.2, this still looks like an update to wait on. As the video shows this latest update still runs slightly slower than the iOS 7.1.2 update. Unless you really want the new features, you may want to wait to see how iOS 8.2 performs on the iPhone 4s.

Looking at the close-up shots in the video, this side by side test of iOS 7.1.2 vs iOS 8.1.2 didn’t take place on an iPhone 4S, but on an iPhone 6. Or am I wrong?

I’m wrong. The shooting-angle fooled me and made the iPhone 4S look thinner with smoother corners and edges, like the iPhone 6. Clear proof is the connector, which is still of the old type ;-)

I have a 4S and still have version 6.1.3. I am trying to download the GoPro app but need at least 7.1 to access.. Are there any known problems with updating from 6.1.3 to 8.1.2 on the 4S? Thanks!

Phone shuts off at around 50% battery life. Bluetooth randomly drops and reconnects all day. iMessage sends from my email account and wont let me switch to phone number. I’ve reset networks, reset settings, and a full restore. 8.1.2 is CRAP!!!

I remember upgrading my 3G to iOS 4 and it was so bad the keyboard couldn’t even keep up with my typing. I’m assuming iOS 8 on the 4S can’t be that bad, but I’ve never seen a typing comparison, so I remain curious and at 7.1.2 as a result. Not that I actually use it much, after grabbing a 6, but I’d still rather leave the 4S at 7.1.2 until I get to try typing on one that’s gone to 8.1.2 first.
