Smartphones keep getting bigger and bigger, but at the same time the price tag is increasing too. A good example of this is Google’s brand new 5.96-inch Nexus 6 smartphone. It’s one of the biggest and best phones or “phablets” around, but it comes at a high price. Those looking for a big screen without the big cost will want to check out these Nexus 6 alternatives.

A prime example of smartphone trends can be seen with the big Galaxy Note 4, Apple’s own iPhone 6 Plus, and Google’s Nexus 6. All focusing on bringing you more details and a better, bigger experience. These are all great phones, but all extremely expensive.

If you’re in the market for a new smartphone this holiday season, or shopping for friends and family, big phones are a dime a dozen, and getting a big beautiful screen doesn’t have to come at a high price tag that’s hard on the wallet. As a result, we’ve round up five great alternative to Google’s Nexus 6.

The original Samsung Galaxy Note was laughed off the stage by many analysts and the people over at Apple, but over the years big screen smartphones have grown increasingly more popular. The Galaxy Note 3 sold millions and millions of units, and the new Galaxy Note 4 and iPhone 6 Plus are extremely popular too.

The term “phablet” isn’t our favorite, but that’s exactly what these are. Phones that are approaching tablet sizes, and in some cases, exceeding them. Even ASUS released a FonePad last year that was a 7-inch tablet capable of making calls. The lines are starting to blur, and the two biggest names in mobile are both on board with Google and Apple.

Some smartphones are so big these days they’re hard to even fit in a pocket, but being able to enjoy movies, games, and Netflix on a huge 5.7-inch or even bigger screen is somewhat enticing. I never thought I’d use a device that big for a daily phone, but I’ve grown to love the 5.96-inch screen and dual front facing speakers of the Nexus 6. However, it comes in at $649 and $699, making it one of the more expensive phones available today. So with that, here are a few big screen smartphones that won’t break the bank. With maybe one that’s expensive, but not as highly priced as the Nexus 6 or Note 4.

Before we begin though, most carriers offer payment plans starting at $25-$29 a month for premium smartphones these days. So while the devices below are cheap, going with a better known smartphone with a payment plan may be a better route. That said, here’s some cheap options worth considering.

BLU Studio 7.0

BLU Studio 7.0

Blu is a smartphone manufacturer here in the United States that may not be a household name, but is getting more and more popular. This week they announced their biggest phone yet, the Blu Studio 7.0 smartphone. At first I thought it was a tablet that looked like the Nexus 7 or a huge Galaxy S5, but it's a 7-inch smartphone.

BLU takes Chinese OEM smartphones and delivers nearly stock Android from a US company with the promise of better support, frequent updates, and takes the worry out of buying a "knock-off" phone. The new BLU Studio 7.0 is a great alternative to the Nexus 6, even if it isn't a premium smartphone.

It has a 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution screen, so it may not be very sharp and crisp, but it has a decent dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and a micro-SD slot, as well as a 5 megapixel rear camera. You get Android 4.4 KitKat, and a big phone all for an extremely low price. In fact, it's just $150 with no contract.
