Projected Capacitive Touch in UMPCs? Let’s Hope So

Loren Heiny has pointed us all to this great article on “Projected Capacitive Touch” that allows hovering by moving your finger across the screen, as seen in the much-hyped iPhone and as experienced with an Active Digitizer pen on Tablet PCs.

Let’s hope we see this technology appear in UMPCs and touch-enabled Tablet PCs. It would certainly improve the experience.

The article suggests that many of the forthcoming touch enabled cell phones will leverage “projected capacitive” touch technology rather than the more traditional resistive digitizers we’ve seen in some devices. One advantage is that with the capacitive approach a finger can be detected without actually fully touching the digitizer (or at least 2mm away). The article says that this improves gesturing.
