Get the laptop review that you want.

LAPTOP Magazine is an excellent source for laptop computer news and reviews.  They’re currently seeking reader input about the type of tests you’d like to see them use when reviewing new units.  They traditionally rely on several groupings of benchmarks and comparisons, but that leaves a lot of room for real-world tests.  Most people who are buying laptops are more concerned with how their machine will perform in the real world rather than numbers crunched by a benchmarking program.  They want something with performance, but also ask if it’s durable, if the battery will last long enough to get things done, or if they can actually use it on their lap.  Some people are just concerned with what it looks like!

Here are a few suggestions from a mobile perspective:

  • Benchmarks are good, but they aren’t everything.  They certainly have a place.
  • The boot test & shutdown test is an important measurement for people on the go.
  • Wi-Fi range (as mentioned by others)
  • Keep the Wi-Fi surfing, battery test.  From a mobile perspective, battery life often trumps performance.  The first thing I look at on a laptop review is how long the battery really lasts.
  • Heat test.  This is a great idea.  I’m not sure if I’ve ever had a laptop that was comfortable on my lap after prolonged use and a little CPU stress.

Provide your suggestions for LAPTOP.  What’s the first thing you look for in a laptop review?
