Dell’s Attempt At Trademarking "Cloud Computing" Rejected – For Now

Published

on

Last Monday, Warner wrote a quick blurb about Dell trying to trademark the term cloud computing, and from various reports it looked as if Dell had been successful. Criticism for the move came quickly and severely with much of the blogosphere condemning Dell for what it sees as nothing more than patent trolling. ITWorld reports that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected Dell’s application and canceled its “Notice of Allowance” Tuesday. Bit-tech.net reports that this isn’t the first time cloud computing has been trolled with Netcentric filing their trademark in 1998 and was rejected. Now the issue goes back to the examiner for additional review and Dell is withholding comment until a final decision has been made.
