Apple Releases the iPhone OS 2.2 Update

Published

on

appleupdate Apple released the latest update for the iPhone and iPod Touch overnight. The 2.2 update includes a number of new features and of course some fixes as well. It also still leaves a lot of common mobile phone features out in the cold. Here’s some of what’s included:

  • Enhancements to Maps
    • Google Street View
    • public transit and walking directions
    • display address of dropped pins
    • share location via email
  • Enhancements to Mail
    • resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
    • improved formatting of wide HTML email
  • improved stability and performance of Safari
  • Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
  • Decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
  • Improved sound quality of visual voicemail messages
  • Pressing the Home button from any Home screen takes you to the first Home screen
  • Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings

From what I’m reading elsewhere it appears that iPod Touch owners don’t get the Google Street View and other Maps enhancements in this update.

Of course Cut and Paste, better BlueTooth support and no MMS functionality.

Note also that Apple released an update to iTunes as well. That version is now 8.0.2

I'll agree with the wish that Apple could fix some of the key missing features before doing anything else.

    My Persona wish list includes

    * Copy and Paste – So I can actually leave my Laptop at home for those time when I need to copy a block of text, a number, etc to past into an email or another App or vice-versa.

    * Forward SMS – Come on this is basic, especially in Europe and Asia where SMS is king. You need the ability to forward an SMS to someone else, especially if it contains important info.

    * SMS character count – Sheesh, its a feature available in the cheapest of phones. I gives you an ide as to how many SMS's it'll split your message into.

    * MMS – At least the ability to view them if not to send.

    * Landscape keyboard outside Safari.

    * Save Files – allow saving of non photo attachments for review later.

    * Reorganise Photos – allow you to fix rotation on the phone, and move and delete photos from folders other then the camera roll.

    * Coverflow to include Video and Video podcasts – Its a pain to have to shift the phone out of landscape mode just to choose another video or podcast.
