Apple Removes Anti-Virus Recommendation and Muddies The Water

Published

on

So, yesterday we, and just about everybody else, posted that Apple had a tech note posted recommending Mac users employ multiple anti-virus solutions to ward off malware. Of course there were hoots of derision tossed Apple’s way given the long held belief that Apple users didn’t have to worry about these kind of things the way Windows users did.

Well, according to this CNet report, Apple has pulled the notice saying ““it was old an inaccurate.” In the KnowledgeBase article Apple states:

“The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box,” he said. “However, since no system can be 100 percent immune from every threat, running antivirus software may offer additional protection.”

Like Elinor Mills at CNet, I find this more confusing than clarifying. But then I think the folks at Apple do as well.

    Yeah, but…

If you check out the Google cached version of this page ( https://209.85.129.132/search?q=cache:TB9FIG5HcZMJ:support.apple.com/kb/HT2550+https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2550&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=jo ) you see that they last updated this “old and outdated” information on 12/2/2008. Since when is yesterday all that old? I suppose it could be a commentary on their internal information handling policies, but somehow I don’t think so.

They updated it to say that Mac OS X has built-in protections, but then later decided it was “unnecessary”.

Man, this is just asking some hacker trying to make a name for himself (believe me there are MANY) to write malicious code to hack mac’s. Be careful what you wish for APPLE!!! On a side note I better download anti-virus software now cause now I’m worried.
