Microsoft Releases Windows Live Essentials Beta

Published

on

windowslivelogoMicrosoft is rolling out the Beta for Windows Live Essentials and updating a number of is Windows Live services. Essentially the Essentials tie applications and on-line services in the whole Windows Live experience together, supposedly in a seamless nature.

Applications included in the Essentials are Messenger (now listed as Messenger 2009), Mail, Photo Gallery, Windows Live Writer, MovieMaker (I’m so not impressed with earlier versions of the Live version of MovieMaker), Family Safety, and of course Toolbar. You can also choose to install Microsoft Office Connector, Microsoft Office Live Add-In, and Silverlight.

Note that you get to choose which apps you can install and any dependencies come along for the ride.

I’m hoping that the Windows Live Writer update will fix the horrendous lag and slow downs that I’ve seen in the last build, so I’m looking forward to checking that out.

Warner, please do let me know if your performance problems go away–we fixed some pretty bad performance regressions that had snuck into the last betas.

Ugh. Mail is a problem. Last version played nicely with my three gmail accounts as far as recieving mail but could not send. I can send now but it downloads ALL my mail….including the spam folder. So, immagine my surprise when I see the message that 27,000 emails were downloaded!!

A check of the settings and now I see that it automatically downloads from all gmail folders, so spam, previously read, archived…everything was downloaded – including my trash. Changed the settings to “new messages only” and that seems to have tamed it a bit.

As for performance, I really don’t like the “adjusting message flags” popup that I get if I select multiple emails for deletion. Slows everything way down.

Seems like one step forward and two back AFAIK.
