Windows 7 on the HTC Shift: Why?

shift_win7_01-500x375 Is anyone using the HTC Shift? Remember all the excitement and hope for that device that slowly but surely fizzled with each delay? Remember when Steve Ballmer held up the Shift in a demo? Such a shame really. But, for those who might be using the Shift, Gear Diary’s Mitchell Oke has installed Windows 7 on the device. Who knows, maybe this will give this device another shot at life, but I somehow doubt it.

    Um, why not? I admit my high hopes for the Shift as a breakthrough UMPC did not pan out, but even though I’m not a UMPC guy, I still want to see the category grow and evolve. I think installing Windows 7 on existing UMPCs is a step in that direction.

    I interpreted it as him saying that the HTC Shift usage model is not that different than say the HTC Advantage. At least not enough to consider the huge price difference.

    Warner, I have seen W7 in an Atom at 600 MHz and let me tell you. What the Shift needs is W7. Around the same performance than XP and all the benefits of W7 for touch and handwriting recognition.

    I remember the Shift being very difficult to use for handwriting, terrible vectoring if you even looked at the screen. Still, for the short time I owned one it was so close to being a great go anywhere device.

    I dont see this saving the shift. HTC had a great idea on their hands but delays and poor battery life and some minor niggles made it disappointment central.

    Even worse is that the alleged successor to the shift looks more like a pmp than anything related to the shift :(
