Jawbone Prime Arrives

Published

on

012 I had ordered a new Jawbone Prime Bluetooth headset when they first became available but there was a back ordered situation that prevented it arriving before I started this crazy two week period. It did finally show up on Friday and naturally I was in another state doing work that day. I managed to get it charged up and do some limited testing Friday night and yesterday. I’m heading from Virginia to Pennsylvania for rehearsals there in a few hours so I’ll be giving it some more extensive testing today and tomorrow.

Early observations are this.

  • The Jawbone Prime can be worn without an ear loop, although two are included.
  • It comes with different sized earpieces to fit your ear. The largest size  is the only one that will keep it in my ear for any length of time without an ear loop.
  • With the largest size selected it is easier to keep the button on my jaw that activates the sound than with the previous version using an ear loop.
  • In early testing my wife can’t detect much difference in the voice quality while I”m driving and she’s at home. Although she does say there appears to be less extraneous noise.
  • My fingers turning the unit on and off hide the indicator light. This occurred with the previous model as well but because the light is smaller it makes it more difficult for me to tell when I’ve successfully turned the device on and off.
  • Functionally the size and weight are the same when the earpiece is hanging off my head. In the pictures the Prime is the lighter color of the two.

More pictures after the jump.

Thanks for this article. I’ve been using Jawbones since they hit the market. Before that I used various Jabra models with great success. I now have two Jawbones that work with my 3G iPhone. They can’t be beaten except for one thing.

The earloops typically break off after a while. There really is no avoiding it especially for someone like me who wears glasses and has to put the earloop inside of the frame i.e between the frame and ear. A few months ago I came across the inner ear loops while on Jabra’s website looking to buy replacement over the ear loops.

I was very skeptical at first but I bought a package which comes with different sizes. They work remarkably well. The only flaw (if you want to call it that) is that usually after walking a long distance the Jawbone will slip out of the ear. It’s not a large problem because I can feel it occurring. One other thing I noticed is that the inner loop significantly reduces my hearing outside sources. That doesn’t bother me unless I’m running the iPod through my car speakers.

So, I have two Jawbones. One with an earloop that I use when I know I’m going to be walking around and one with the inner loop for driving.

Is the power connector still proprietary, as opposed to standardized (mini or micro USB)?

Yes, the connector is still proprietary. I have the Jawbone 2 and plan on getting a Jawbone prime soon, but the connector makes it a pain to keep it charged.
