Microsoft Takes The Wraps Off of Office 2010

Published

office2010logoMicrosoft is unveiling what we will see with Office 2010 and there are lots of promises. Chief among them are web versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote. There will be both free and paid versions of the web apps. Test builds won’t be available until August except by invitation, so that will be a big month.

Microsoft’s strategy is obviously moving to the web, (I don’t think that’s a big surprise to anyone) and the idea is that your data can be shared on the desktop, in the browser and on your mobile phone. This will be handled by Sharepoint 2010.

Although there is no pricing information available yet, there will be five SKUS’s available. Office Professional Plus 2010 (available only via volume licensing)

  • Office Professional Plus 2010
  • Office Professional 2010
  • Office Home and Business 2010 (the new SMB SKU)
  • Offie Standard 2010 (only available via volume licensing)
  • Office Home and Student 2010

There’s good reading and video from several sources on this at TechCrunch, Information Week, Mary Jo Foley’s blog, and Robert Scoble’s blog. And also at istartedsomething and Paul Thurrott’s blog.
