David Pogue Launches War Against Canned VoiceMail Messages

Here’s a fight that is probably worth getting into, and David Pogue can probably use his celebrity geek journo status to at least give it some attention.

Canned voicemail messages (you know the ones –At the tone, please record your message. When you have finished recording, you may hang up, or press 1 for more options. To leave a callback number, press 5) not only waste your time but cost you money. Pogue figures that if all of Verizon’s customers leave or check a voice mail twice a weekday that dumps about $620 million into Verizon’s coffers on an annual basis. So, he’s launched the Take Back The Beep Campaign to try and get carriers to change their behavior.

Pogue has published the four major carriers contact addresses for you to register a complaint, I’m guessing the ones that actually get read will get changed quickly. David Pogue promises to follow up on this. Here’s hoping he does.

Meanwhile, head to the barricades!
