Motorola Droid Looks to Heat Things Up

droidAll weekend long we’ve been hearing about the Motorola Droid. First came the iDon’t ads from Verizon that takes on the Apple iPhone weaknesses. (see the ad after the jump). Then we started seeing more info on the phone itself. Boy Genius has some early hands on impressions of the Android 2.0 device and seems to be be very impressed. (There is also a gallery of pictures.)

Here’s the thing. Everyone has known that this winter was going to be the breakout of Android on a number of platforms and we’re beginning to see that happen. And not just on phones.  But in the phone market, at the moment, there is one kingpin to go after and that’s the iPhone. Given the hoopla (and remember it is only hoopla at this point) it sounds like there are some reasons that Apple, Google, and AT&T have been fighting on every level from government regulation to ad-wars. Now Verizon is in the mix as well. My hunch is that this is going to get nastier and nastier, which means that’s a good things for consumers as competition rules in the end. My second hunch, is that Apple may have left too much room for these new Android devices to get a toehold, and that the competition will become especially fierce, say, oh about next June. I’m sensing a disturbance in the force.

    Brownie points to Verizon for an aggressive campaign, but it seems a bit mish-mashed. There are Star Wars allusions and tech geek selling points, like open development, yet they’re gunning for the iPhone, which is successful because it’s a smartphone that broke out of the geek niche. Seems like their marketing guys decided to throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks. Okay for now, but they’ll need more focus for the next phase.

    The iPhone is not a smartphone, it’s an over-hyped feature phone, it’s got a closed, locked OS, and you can only buy its apps from Apple- that restricts customer choice, not at all a computer-on-a-phone. Compare the iPhone with the Samsung Eternity, it’s the same features but the iPhone cost more. Apple marketing pumped it up, AT&T’s inferior network sinking it, and it’s gonna get buried by the combination of Google Android and Verizon Wireless. Once again, Apple product relegated to use by some fashionistas.

    The iPhone is popular with both techies and non-techies. I can do everything on my iPhone smartphone that I could do on my Blackberry, Treo, Windows Mobile and Symbian smartphones. There are hundreds of times more apps in the iTunes Store than are available for any other platform. iPhone apps tend to be much cheaper than the apps I used to buy for other platforms. Android is a good platform, but it will suffer the same fragmentation as WinMo. Google and the rest will push Apple which will benefit everyone.
