All weekend long we’ve been hearing about the Motorola Droid. First came the iDon’t ads from Verizon that takes on the Apple iPhone weaknesses. (see the ad after the jump). Then we started seeing more info on the phone itself. Boy Genius has some early hands on impressions of the Android 2.0 device and seems to be be very impressed. (There is also a gallery of pictures.)
Here’s the thing. Everyone has known that this winter was going to be the breakout of Android on a number of platforms and we’re beginning to see that happen. And not just on phones. But in the phone market, at the moment, there is one kingpin to go after and that’s the iPhone. Given the hoopla (and remember it is only hoopla at this point) it sounds like there are some reasons that Apple, Google, and AT&T have been fighting on every level from government regulation to ad-wars. Now Verizon is in the mix as well. My hunch is that this is going to get nastier and nastier, which means that’s a good things for consumers as competition rules in the end. My second hunch, is that Apple may have left too much room for these new Android devices to get a toehold, and that the competition will become especially fierce, say, oh about next June. I’m sensing a disturbance in the force.
